well, I haven't been on the Planet as much as I used to. It's been a busy month. I attended a Truck Driving school over the course of the past month and finished the school last Friday. After 15 years in telecom, I have had enough. Tired of the constant layoffs/project-based work....and actually grew to hate the actual work when it was there.

I have my Class A CDL test tomorrow morning at the DMV. I feel pretty confident. Others in my class who were at the same skill level as myself all passed their tests Monday and today. They all said that basically the 'tests' we were given at the school, were much more stringent than the DMV test - essentially, if you did well on the tests at school, you should have no problem at the DMV.

I've got a few pre-hire letters with companies; 2 of which will have me home every weekend. Another will have me home 3 days for 11 days out. My goal is to treat this upcoming year as an extension of my school/training, and try to get at least 12 months experience then start scouting 'local' jobs here in KC with a more predictable schedule, and hopefully decent hourly pay.

I always tried to schedule my day from 3a to whenever.

If you can finish mid-afternoon, you'll never have to worry about finding a parking spot.

agree. that's going to be my plan of attack (contingent on pick up/delivery time obviously). Get out early, get the miles in, have plenty of places to park, and shut 'er down for the night.

I'm all but set to start orientation on the 13th; 2 weeks there (1 week of paperwork, equipment familiarization, and 1 week of securement training); thn 5 weeks on the road with a trainer. I'm sure I'll learn a SHIT load during those 5 weeks. tips, tricks etc.

they are going to try to find a trainer that's within about 100 miles or less of where I live so when he goes on his home time, I can do the same. Not guaranteed, but they will try. Hopefully those 5 weeks go by quickly.

one tip I'm not falling for again is the 'ol 'let's save our money and conserve water and shower together' trick.

I went with Werner initially. my trainer was a ****ing asshole.

He had a dedicated run from Tropicana in Bradenton,Fl. to Los Angeles.

I was out 9 days with him, out and back, etc, and the dick wouldn't let back into any docks. I called my Student Driver manager when I got back to Florida and quit. Trans Am called and I decided to go with them.

Trans Am sucked, but at least they had areas at their terminals where you could practice backing. Dock, parallel, off set, and straight line.

Yeah...I've heard absolute horror stories about trainer scenarios like that. I'm crossing my fingers I don't Have to go through anything like that.
