Sutton says we dont need Peters

Bob Sutton downplays absence of Marcus Peters vs. Raiders

The Chiefs suspended cornerback Marcus Peters as a result of his bizarre behavior late in Sunday’s loss to the Jets, when he threw a flag in to the stands, presumed he’d been ejected, left the playing area, and then returned in full uniform — but without socks. With the 6-6 Raiders coming to town, the Chiefs won’t be the same on defense without him, right?

Wrong, according to defensive coordinator Bob Sutton.

“It doesn’t change dramatically,” Sutton said of the Kansas City defense without Peters. “You guys have asked me a thousand times about why doesn’t he shadow, why doesn’t Marcus do this, and it is because our system is set up so, certainly Marcus is a really good football player and we will miss him, but it is just part of football. Whether it is injury or whatever. We can’t really change this late and really do much different than what we would do. Guys stepping up and got to play their tails off.”

Sutton also was asked with Kenneth Acker will be the next man up in the absence of Peters.

“I wouldn’t say that, I wouldn’t tell you who it is going to be anyways,” Sutton said. “Honestly, we are rolling guys through both places.”

Having Darrelle Revis around helps, assuming they’ll use him for more than the first half. Whatever they do, it’s a must-win game for the Chiefs, who are in danger of becoming the third team in three years to start 5-0 and miss the playoffs.

Yeah, it's just crazy talk to actually adjust the defense mid season. We have to do the same exact thing over and over even though it no longer works.

I believe changing whether the CB's play one side or follow someone around, which in effect changes at least 2 players responsibility on the fly, is a rather large change to make.

Its not just blitzing more or changing up a little zone vs man. Its changes that involve responsibilities and then you throw in the variability depending on what you are playing for that play specifically, zone, man, or combination etc..

I'm not defending how Sutton has done this year, I'm just saying I kind of get what he is saying.

Why don’t you just marry Sutton if you love him so much?

Those are changes that any defense should be capable of. It's part of the game. Sutton is stubborn and cannot adjust his approach. It's quite evident during a game. If his game plan doesn't work, he's incapable or unwilling to adjust his approach. He just continues to pound the square peg. Shitty offenses have decimated the defense for it over the past 5 weeks. A defense should be adjusted to support the individual players' abilities and weaknesses. Especially when replacing one of the best players.

This year he definitely seem stubborn.

Historically I'm pretty sure that the Chiefs have played much better in the second half of games while he has been DC. Could be selective memory but I think we had been one of the best at not giving up TD's in the 3rd and 4th quarters of games.

This year its worse in the 2nd half or just a shit show all the way around.
