Judge accepts Adrian Peterson's no contest plea, avoids jail time


Montgomery County (Texas) District Attorney Brett Ligon announced Tuesday Vikings running back Adrian Peterson pleaded no contest to a Class A misdemeanor. Peterson was charged with reckless assault in the child abuse case.
Judge Kelly Case deferred Peterson's no contest plea for two years. He was fined $4,000, will serve 80 hours of community service and be placed on probation.
Peterson was indicted in September on a felony charge of injury to a child for using a wooden switch to discipline his 4-year-old son. The boy suffered cuts, marks and bruising, according to the Associated Press.
Ligon added there will be no conviction on Peterson's record provided he completes the conditions of the plea agreement. Ligon also said Peterson will be subjected to random drug tests, as per the condition of every probation.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league will review Peterson's situation, but the league "cannot provide a timetable," according to NFL.com. Peterson's attorney, Rusty Hardin, said Peterson's return to the league "is in the hands of the NFL."
