Dorsey and the salary cap

But on the surface, we know they perennially have one of the league’s worst salary cap situations and did not have enough space to sign their draft class. Cutting Maclin saves $10 million, which is more than enough for the rookies, but not nearly enough to make the team as good as it was last week.

If it’s as simple as the Chiefs are allowing everyone to believe — that it’s strictly business, a cap casualty — then they are admitting incompetence in a key part of building a sustainable and successful football team.

The Chiefs waited too long to extend Justin Houston and Eric Berry, bumbled their way into spending more than what should’ve been necessary on Tamba Hali, and continue to pay Smith at least a little more than he’s worth. They have mismanaged the cap for years. The trend only feels worse by the Broncos constantly having enough space to seemingly sign any free agent or extend any in-house star they please.

I think Dorsey saw that and made the personnel changes needed. Trip McCracken ****ed us with the salary cap. But what I love about Dorsey is that when he sees something that is wrong he isn't afraid to fix it.

One of Sam's worst articles. The Chiefs tried to get Houston and Berry done early. They weren't going to get discounts no matter what bc these players bet on themselves and wanted $$. They also tried to get Rodney Hudson done early and he too bet on himself and eventually priced himself way out of here.

All-pro players have all the leverage. That's why Elway was forced to pay Von Miller a similar contract to Justin Houston.

Terrible article.

Dorsey has kept his own guys and maxed out the salary cap every year to maximize the talent on the roster.

That has resulted in winning records every year, a playoff win, division title and a very bright future.

A little house cleaning next offseason and KC will have 40m in cap space without losing anybody important.

If Houston doesn't hurt his knee, this stupid article is never written.

Total hindsight nonsense.

I remember exactly where I was when that happened. I was at my house, watching a Chiefs game.

Great post Boss.

I didn't like comparing Dorsey to the Broncos bc Elway had it easy. Players will take lower deals to play with a HOF QB every time.

Since Manning left, the Broncos haven't gotten deals for A level players in FA.

The fact that this idiot fails to realize this tells you everything you need to know.

He went from getting bargain deals on some of the best defensive players in the league to playing market value for guys like Stephenson and Watson

John Fox is a bad coach that was only winning anything bc of Manning. He's continued to prove he's a bad coach in Chicago.

He won a division title and a playoff game with Tim Tebow as his starter. It took Reid 4 years to accomplish both of those things in KC.
