Somebody's gotta have the inside scoop on Google Fiber launching tomorrow..??

https://fiber.google.com/savethedate/

Live broadcast over YouTube tomorrow. Anybody have any early news on this? Will it be available all over the Metro? How long will the waiting list be?

Anybody know anything? I'm impatient.

That being said, I'm not sure what the sign-up to delivery date time is (if enough people sign up), but AT&T's GigaPower is still toned better than what I'm getting today from TWC, is $30 cheaper per month for the Internet/TV/Phone bundle, so if I'm not sure when Google Fiber will "be in my house" I might be inclined to try the AT&T offering if they don't demand some many-year commitment.

Plus, I'm not sure the common folks in our neighborhood know what to ask when Mr. AT&T rolls up to their door. Knowing that pretty-much everybody at AT&T is a slimy whore slut, I'm sure they'll tell them they are Google fiber, get them to sign-up (thinking it's Google Fiber), and Google pass us up because too few people signed-up. Yeah, tinfoil hat = on!!!

So yeah, I want Google Fiber even if they don't offer real phones (!!!!!!!!!!!), but some things have to happen, but for now it looks like GigaPower (and their 8Mbps up shit) is the for-sure thing.

Yeah, I've been doing this whole networking thing since we ran ribbon cables in AGS+s, had IOS manuals in print, we had to erase Kalpana off the switch, and folks new what "router on a stick" meant.

JC, I actually am older than that! Thick wire, thin wire, Token Ring and DECnet was on my resume when I was asked to apply for my first teaching position in networking. From Token Ring to arguing the fail that is LANE to people who were sucked-in by Fore and were being told the Forerunner was the answer to all backbones. Hey man, 53 byte (or is it bite) cells baby!!

One of the first thing my engineers learn from me is that I am one too. After that I'll tell them why the guy or gal who works for me, who has a guy who works for him/her, hired the guy or gal who just hired him - because he has potential if he doesn't get too caught-up in the hype of the desperate sales guys feeding them drinks because their widget (perhaps their only widget!!) does one thing better than something in Cisco's lineup. But hey, they bought them shit off the top shelf and brought along a leggy lady too...

But I won't argue against Juniper, they make some pretty-OK stuff and are making Cisco's life hard for good reason.

So I'm not partial to Cisco, I just don't hate them because they're big.

Looks like you took that Mb/mb comment to the heart.. should probably change the batteries on your sarcasm meter.

I'm probably older than you.. but I did get my masters @ DeVry (lucky guess). I'm not saying 'anything' is better than Cisco, but Juniper definitely is. There is a reason why almost every major ISP provider uses them as their layer 3/MPLS core. Redundancy built into their routing engines & switch fabric not to mention their operating system is light years more robust than IOS. But I don't know much about that shit.. only been in telco for about 15 years, so I'm still learning. Damn kids keep eating up all my free time, otherwise I'd cee cee eye E by now.

I didn't take anything to heart, I just called you out for being a pompous ass over something that's rather irrelevant. And it's almost always done by somebody who's trying to impress somebody with their grammar-police skills in the technology corner of the room. And when you added the "I can't stand" or words to that effect, it seems like the least little thing bothers you.

So it's all good, I'm sure my network engineering dick isn't the biggest in this room, but I've been doing it for a while and I'm OK with a mistake ot three.

Not to worry, we're still friends. I'm the friendliest guy on this board, you'll come to know that..

Its really not irrelevant. They are two completely different data rates. If a sales rep puts down 500mbps vs 500Mbps, its a big difference where I work. If you signed up Google Fiber, and it said 1024mbps, would you sign up? You bet your ass you wouldnt (i hope not).

Well, I am actually seeking help from my SP board brothers as I decide my path forward at home. And, unlike my neighbors, I'm worrying about the Mbps vs. mbps I'm going to get through the COAX to the TV box that'll also be an AP. I don't want to be N-connected to the closest TV box, then 1024-connected back to the main unit because it rides COAX.

Yes...this is how it works. You don't have to use the wireless radio in each TV box though. Easy to turn each one on and off so you can balance between having too much interference and a good signal.

Quote:
AND in all that "connecting back to the base" (over the house COAX or even wireless - if they do that - whatever they choose/do), I hope I don't waste 70% of the potential Internet BW.
About 200Mbps at each box.

Quote:
Having looked at how they set things up in the house there will be main Dmarc point (prolly something you shove in the basement) and in the "main" house location looks like it'll have three boxes/functions; a network box, a TV box (because I'm sure it'll be co-located with the main TV), and a storage box. But I think I saw that they have a TV/Storage combo box, so I could be wrong about that and those two functions are now combined. Oh, and I guess in a perfect world there should be no need to even co-locate the network box and TV box. LOL, so many options..
They'll do whatever you want. We had them install two coax jacks when it was installed. No charge..no bitching. Just "you bet", followed by homeboy calling in for two others to come help get everything pulled through the walls or up the side of my house.

Now you've got just the network/storage box and the TV boxes that can act as wireless bridges and have ethernet on the back. One is running a Microcell and the other is plugged into my PS4 (feel like I just posted this).

It appears I may be operating on old info. The new boxes are using MoCA 2.0 so it can pull rates faster than 200Mbps.

** edit**

Oh and I did the same thing before I had mine installed at the old place. Had all these grand plans, then realized that no matter what when you've got a gig on the side of your house everything is fast as hell.
