Mega tradedown Mock

Okay, its a Saturday and I'm bored. A while back the thought occurred to me (hell someone probably posted it here) that there is a slim chance that we could trade down twice inside the top 10. Since I think we're going after Dan Williams, I thought I'd chart it out and see what we'd net in picks. And of course, I then had to mock it up using the CBS Player ranking for approximate available players.

The Bills have 9 picks, the Browns have 10 and we have 8.

There are a lot of players I like that are likely to go in rounds 4 and later.

After trading down twice with the Browns & Bills, the Chiefs net picks 86, 108, 135, 141, 179 & 217, based on the draft pick value chart.

Chiefs trade down with Cleveland from 5 to 7 nets them the 86th & 135th picks. Point value KC's 5 = 1700 pts. CLE's 7=1500, 86=160, 135=38.5. 1698.5 points total.

Chiefs trade down with Buffalo from 7 to 9 nets them picks 9, 108, 141, 179, 217. Point value KC's 7=1500, Buffalos 9=1350, 108=78, 141=35.5, 179=20.8, 217=5.6. Total = 1489.9.

Chances are, we wouldn't want 14 picks in the draft and would use some of them to trade up. Just having fun though.

Round 1, Pick# 9 - Dan Williams, NT
The 31st ranked rushing defense gets their run stopper.

Round 2, Pick# 4 - Carlos Dunlap, DE/OLB
How well he fits into a 3-4 OLB role is debatable. His stock slid thanks to the DUI.

Round 2, Pick# 18 - Nate Allen, FS
Missing out on Berry hurt, this position desperately needs to be upgraded.

Round 3, Pick# 5 - Sean Lee, ILB
The Chiefs were horrible against the run for more than one reason.

Round 3, Pick# 22 - Taylor Price, WR
Stud WR added to a team needing a lot of help.

Round 4, Pick# 7 - Clay Harbor, TE
Best pro prospect to ever come out of Missouri State.

Round 4, Pick# 12 - Kam Chancellor, SS
Thumper against the run to help at an area of need for KC. Romeo coached him in the Shrine game.

Round 5, Pick# 7 - John Skelton, QB
Small school stud getting a lot of hype for a good reason. Probably won't get past the Texans in round 4 since his uncle is a part owner.

Round 5, Pick# 9 - Kyle Calloway, RT
A road grader capable of beating out the crap on the squad right now at RT.

Round 5, Pick# 13 - Dezmon Briscoe, WR
Chiefs are still desperately seeking help on the WR front.

Round 5, Pick# 15 - Eric Olsen, C
Charlie finally gets one of his guys and the Chiefs get a new center for the next 10+ years.

Round 5, Pick# 17 - Jamar Chaney, ILB
A little bit small, his plus side in a 3-4 is his former time as WLB and play on passing downs.

Round 6, Pick# 19 - Kevin Basped, DE/OLB
Everything about his size & speed suggests he's capable of playing OLB in a 3-4. Only had 9.5 sacks in 09 thanks to a nagging knee injury.

Round 7, Pick# 25 - Denario Alexander, WR
Another case of an injury guy worth taking at this point. If all the WR's from this draft pan out, the Chiefs WR group goes from a position of weakness to strength in a fairly short time period.

we'd better get more than that for trading down once, let alone twice.

If we trade down in the first round I would hope like hell we get another 2nd round pick!

3rd's and 4th's don't cut it.

We gain 6 picks, what more do you want?

We could get Clevelands #72 pick (230 pts), but we'd have to give up pick #145 (33.5 pts).

I should have prefaced this by saying that I don't think the picks they would have to give up would prevent them from making the trade. If Cleveland doesn't want to give up the 3rd rounder, but the point total is there, why not make the trade?

Seriously though, if you are Pioli and you know that Williams is the guy you want, why take him higher than you need to if you can trade down and still get him? Forget the picks for a minute and just think about it. Why pay him more than you need to.

Now with the picks, if you want to trade down and Cleveland doesn't want to give up their 3rd rounder, why wouldn't you just take what you can get if the points even out?

the rumor is that we trade number five to cleveland (and a fourth or fifth if memory serves) and get back their first and second rounders. THAT is good enough.

I want high picks in the draft---third and fourth rounders won't cut it.

I don't really like spending the top four picks entirely on defense.

I am 100% certain you can find a better pick than Carlos Dunlap, and I am just as certain that you can find a better player to play OLB for a 3-4 at that pick. That is a waste.

You need to look at a point chart. 2nd rounders don't happen for 2 slots in the first round.

There is a 200 point difference between pick 5 & 7 and a 150 point difference between pick 7 & 9.

Cleveland's 2nd is worth 520 points and Buffalo's is worth 490. Don't see how you could convince them to make that trade. That's not to say you couldn't use a few of the picks you just got to trade back up into the late second round, but I figured my post was confusing enough as it is.

The 16th pick in the 2nd round is worth 420 points.

If we were trading up we'd just about have to give up all of our picks to get there.
3rd #69/245 points
4th #103/88 points
5a #137/37.5 points
5b #143/34.5 points
5c #145/33.5 points
Total 438.5 points.

Would it help if I said "very slim chance"?

You can add up a bunch of "points" for 5th-7th rounders but how how many of those are going to actually make the team?

This year especially, because of the talent coming out and all the holes on this team that we need fill help to play asap we need quality guys in the 1st and 2nd rounds, imo.

I don't see it. Cleveland has 3 third round picks, and thats why I think they're likely to use one to trade up.

Clevelands picks: #7 1500 pts, #38 520 pts. Total 2020 points
KC pick: #5 1700 pts

There's a 320 point differential there.

Feel free to package any of our picks with it to make it work. It would take our 3rd to get their 2nd.

Eh, You never know what teams will do in the heat of the draft when the clock is ticking down and they really want a player.

I know it wasn't during the draft but how many people were surprised by Cassel and Vrabel for just a 2nd rounder?
What the Boys gave for Roy Williams?
And on and on.....
I realize it's players not picks so you can't use your trusty ol' chart there. But if you read through all the trades that took place just last year you find yourself going wow! I didn't remember that! Check it out.

Wow, Your really obessed with this.
