Oil snobs crack me up...

I think changing your oil matters more than which you use. It's funny how people who tend to know which oil is better, and are willing to pay more for the better oils, are also the ones who actually change their oil.

Raise your hand if you've changed your oil and filter at least every 5,000 miles (usually 4,000 [but never 6,000!!!]), use Penzoil (and perhaps others!!!!), and have a vehicle that's got 200,000+ miles with no engine issues?

So the point isn't lost that oil snobs can spend a lot more money on better oil, but the magic is in actually changing it, and the filter (FRAM too!!), every 4,000'ish mikes (give-or-take 500 miles).

I'm definitely a snob when it some to conventional and synthetic.

I haven't used conventional in more than a decade.

Synthetic is better. That is a fact.

VARSITY
I have a blended oil and take it to the dealership for them to change every 7500 so that's what I do.

That's what they recommend I'm good with that.

Yes, yes it is...

And I trust you change your oil too, right?

Do you go the 10K miles route with synthetic? I think if you do, the price can be a lot more of a wash.

Absolutely. Been doing my own since my dad showed me how to when I was a teenager.

10,000 on Mobil 1 and I change the filter every 5000.

My Silverado crossed the 200K barrier last Thursday. I change the oil every time the idiot light comes on or every 6K miles whichever is first (normally the idiot light comes on around 5,500 it seems, but it has gone to 6K without coming on a handful of times).
I use a Fram TG and Valvoline MaxLife synthetic blend. Knock on wood, I've never had an issue other then general maintenance except for a water pump that went out a few years ago.

Hmmmmmm, maybe it's just a Silverado thing.... I agree, changing the oil in mine seems to be the cats-ass in terms of awesomeness...

If I was Audi, I would use this as advertising, assuming the car was still running up until this point.

Even though I use Mobil 1, I generally change the oil when the manual says to do it - every 5000 on my Forester and every 10,000 on my wife's CR-V. They boys' cars get less than 3000 miles a year on them, so I do those once a year. I use stock filters on the Sub and the Honda and NAPA Gold on the boys' cars. We don't drive a lot, with mostly shorter trips, and it can get very hot here in the summer and very cold in the winter, so I like to play it safe.

The next step is synthetic manual transmission fluid in my Forester so it doesn't feel like I am shifting through tar on cold mornings.

I've had many a battle with my Dad over Pennzoil. However, in the early 90's, my wife was driving a '87 Toyota Tercel that she had bought new. She pretty much only drove it to work in town - about 6 miles a day round trip - and she drives like a granny. The Tercel started to run rough and the mileage went from the low 30's down to about 20 mpg. We had a mechanic look at it.

He told us the oil had sludged up (I saw it - looked like jello) because of the Pennzoil and the short trips. He claimed there was paraffin in the oil and we weren't getting the engine hot enough to keep it flowing. He suggested we changed to a different brand of oil or started getting the car up to highway speeds occasionally. We changed to Havoline without changing driving habits and never had another problem.

I know it's a hotly contested theory but it seemed to be our experience. Pennzoil is probably perfectly fine for the average driver but it didn't work in our situation.

So, SAUTO and others, what would it take to get the above engine back in order? $3,000? $5,000?

I'm no expert, but I do have some knowledge. I have no idea on price, Jason can answer that, but that head will have to come off, and a valve may be burnt. If a portion of a valve broke off, then there could be piston damage.

This cannot be repeated enough: the owner of that car is a ****ing moron.
