MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

Yeah, Smith was pretty much a complete disaster in that game.

Seriously, Smith just ****ed that game up in just about every conceivable manner. The 'hidden' touchdowns were made up by a slew of 'hidden' interceptions because that guy's piss-poor game management killed numerous drives.

They may as well been Eli Manning's braindead heaves into triple coverage at that point. It was a master class in losing a game without superficially appearing to have sucked many dicks.

Sadly, further review confirms that yes, many dicks were in fact sucked by Alex Smith. A plethora of penii.

It looks like he says "Who called timeout?".

If I'm Reid....I'm distancing myself from Smith this offseason. 15 TDs isn't winning you shit.

There was no waiting until the end of the season

I gave up on Smiff much earlier this year, only decided to shut up and see what happens once it started looking like we'd make the playoffs... and he yet again proved his doubters correct

To springboard off some of DJLNs rhetoric... Smiff got us to base camp, but we're gonna need a new sherpa to reach the summit

Those are just numbers. That's fantasy football nonsense.

The biggest reason we lost was our rushing defense. Bell ran for 170 yards.

I think Alex is coming back (because Chiefs), but getting Foles at the time we did certainly makes you wonder.

Andy did try to get Foles before Alex when he was hired.

Yes the defense couldnt get off the field. But giving up 19 pts at home to a very avg bucs team should put your team in a position to win. But alex smith has to play almost perfect mistake free football in order for him to be effective. He needs to run in order to be effective. He needs to get kelce the ball in order to be effective. When he does neither he becomes a liability.

Reid still deserves some blame for that timeout call. How is the team not prepared for such occasions? Do we not practice this shit? Two postseasons in a row now we took extended 4th quarter drives when we didn't have the luxury.

Yeah, both drives ended up in TDs but we forced our defense to turn around and get an immediate stop in both situations creating a super thin margin of error.
