Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

There isn't a player in this draft that is worth being a top 8 pick ... they are all going to be 'reaches'. At least on paper.

I'm sure that in 3 years several players will become studs and people will bitch, but that happens EVERY year.
If those players in the draft are that, why choose to "upgrade" a spot with one, when you aren't sure he's an upgrade?

Alex Smith was on his way to throwing 24 TD's last year in a run first conservative offense.

Now he's in a pass first aggressive offense with a solid surrounding cast.

No reason to think he can't throw 23 to 25 TD's this year unless he gets hurt.

Not necessarily.

See Thigpen, Tyler.

Alex Smith is never throwing 30 TDs here. Mark it.

You could say that the reason he threw the TD's he did was because of the offense and that teams geared for the run.

not really ... at least not nationally

people around here will bitch no matter what, so that's a given

Nationally it will be about 2 things:

Does Joeckel/Fisher suck?
Was there a stud QBotF available @1.1

It can't really even be a surprise stud QB draft pick either because if all the teams pass on that draft pick then the Chiefs aren't any dumber than everyone else. ala Tom brady in round 6 or whatever.

If another team selects a QB in the top 10 that turns out to be a stud then the Chiefs are going to look really stupid unless Alex Smith plays really well.

Interesting stat:

Trent Green, the ringleader of the Greatest Show on Earth that set a record for points scored in a season.

That Trent Green.

Never threw for 30 TDs in a season. Closest he ever got was 27.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree that Alex ****ing Smith will never break 30 either. He doesn't have to, no, but for the purposes of this conversation, there's a .002% chance that he ever does.

Same type of situation here. Our offense is designed to attack and throw and teams will most definitely be in the box trying to stop Charles.

No, it's just logic. More aggressive passing is virtually guaranteed to mean more turnovers. I don't think anybody should expect 13/5 TD/INT ratio if he's being asked to do more than ride the running game with the occasional play action and dump offs to backs and ends thrown in. He's never played with anyone here, he's never played for Andy Reid and he's never thrown 450 passes in a season, much less 500 or 550. I don't think it makes much sense at this point to expect him to turn into Drew Brees.

Maybe it's just me, but I think setting the bar at 30 TD's is a bit...irrational.

Teams are going to gear agaisnt the run vs an Andy Reid offense?

That makes no sense. "Our offense is designed to attack and throw". So if we are going to throw, why are teams going to load the box?

I know right, its too bad Dorsey and Reid don't care about winning. If only we could hire a GM and coach that wanted to win games. That would be something special.

I guess teams like KC, Buffallo, Jacksonville etc...should start looking for coaches and GM's who want to win and boom they will become winners.

Sure.

Like I said before, I don't really care about Albert. I think Joeckel or Fisher have more upside potentially, but I can see why some would disagree. We just don't know what is going on behind closed doors. If he's wanting to be paid that much, it's not my money so I don't care, but if it's causing them not to be able to re up Houston or Berry etc, move on.
