Considering a vacation to Atlanta

The kiddo may or may not be coming with us.

Just wondering what to make sure to do while we're there. We decided on Atlanta because neither of us has been there, and it is home of the largest aquarium in the US. Other than that, I'm not for sure what it's known for as far as tourist attractions. I'm commencing Google searches, but I'd just thought I'd also see if anyone on here who either lives there or has been there can suggest some things. Thinking July or August.

Just in case we take the kiddo, he will be 16-18 months at the time of the trip. If you list something, please say whether it would be appropriate (or geared towards) children.

Thanks!

Oh yeah - the airport security lines in Atlanta are INSANE. There are only two checkpoints for that massive airport. Granted, there are a lot of lanes, but still...it's pretty bad.

Did the Chattanooga aquarium get killed in that big fire, or did it survive? I remember an aquarium being at major risk.

Edit: That was Gatlinburg.

I had no idea there were that many aquariums in the South. Denver's way bigger than Chattanooga and Gatlinburg, and we only got an aquarium about 15 years ago, and it eventually got taken private because it was losing money under public ownership.

Rather than go to Atlanta, fly into Jacksonville and use it as your home base. The beaches here are nice and Savannah is only 2 hours north. St. Augustine is about 30 minutes south and Daytona Beach is about 45 minutes to an hour from here. Orlando is 2 hours from here. Alot you can do from here with just a short drive.

Louisville is a nice place to visit but most of what you suggest you can complete in 2 or 3 days. And the Bourbon Trail is not so much fun to do with a child in tow if they bring him along.

I got some family in the ATL. It's not bad and there are some things to do but not enough to justify a vacation. It's so cheap to fly out to Florida or the west coast and there's a ton of options depending on what you want to do.

Luv - I don't know all the logistics to your trip but Atlanta isn't really a vacation destination. There are things to do but it's just a big concrete metro. I would look into what Deberg_1990 just said.
I'll suggest that. I suggested Chattanooga, because I knew my boyfriend like the aquarium there, as well as Ruby Falls. He wants to go someplace neither of us has been. He looked up aquariums, because he loves them, and saw that Atlanta's was the biggest. And neither of us has been there.

It would be a road trip, more than likely, so I may suggest spending a day doing the aquarium and the Coke museum (sounds pretty cool), but that we not stay there. I don't think he's ever seen the ocean (or gulf), so I may suggest Savannah as a final destination. He'll love the fresh seafood, and I'll love the history.

Vacation is still in the planning stages. Not even sure how long we'll have, if we'll want to fly or drive, if we're taking the kiddo, etc.

I live in Atlanta, my advice is go visit Savannah as Rooster suggests. Another place in Georgia is Columbus. You can stay downtown in the historic district then visit the National Infantry Museum at Ft Benning or the Little White House in FDR State Park.

If you are determined to visit Atlanta there are the MLK Museum, Aquarium, Coke Museum and Stone Mountain. Stone Mountain is the most fun and memorable.

Another place to consider is Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg in Tennessee. There are many things to do including Smoky Mountain State Park.

Also worth looking at is South Walton beaches in Florida. You can look up 30A and read all about it. That stretch of beach is as beautiful as anywhere I've been. If you want white powder soft beaches and turquoise water with hardly any waves kids can play in, it's perfect. Takes about 5 hours from ATL.

It's literally where Atlanta goes on vacation.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. My daughter has to perform there once a year, so we are there that often. It's cool the first time or 2, but now I'm just like "I can't wait to get back home". But the laser light show on the side of the mountain is prettt cool.
