The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

I don't think he's going to want to be here as a backup QB. And his current contract is basically starter money friendly. I just don't see him being here unless it's to start.

Alex smith right now is just a good qb who knows how to take advantage of talent and make this offense into a well-oiled machine. He's not going to stand out like the rodgers and bradys of this world but as an offensive unit as whole we can be a dangerous unit with the run game and efficient, high percentage passing/scoring.
Because we need to draft a field general that COULD become Rodgers or Brady. We need to develop a guy to be elite. We know Smith will never be. I don't want another 90's run. I want a dynasty run with championships. Alex Smith isn't going to do that for you. Maybe Geno won't either, but it's time to try. We don't mind busting out on the Tyson Jacksons, Glenn Dorseys, and Ryan Simms of the world in the top 5, but for some reason this fanbase is scared to death of drafting the most impactful position on the field. I don't get it.

Too bad for him. Only a few QBs outright deserve a starting job and he isnt one if them.

why do yards matter to us fans so much? Yards are an empty stat. That's why passer rating factors yards per attempt alot more. Alex's y/attempt was 8.0. That was 3rd in the league. He couldn't throw 5,000 yards because he didn't throw that much. Their run game was too good. But when he did throw he was good.

Hey, I get all of the hate for Alex Smith in this thread. I really do. You guys don't want him. I don't want him either.

But let's not get carried away here. Have you already forgotten how bad Cassel really was? Cassel was horrible on an epic scale. Cassel was so ****ing bad that when Kyle Orton came here, Orton looked like a damn good quarterback by comparison. And Kyle Orton sucks. He got benched for Tim Tebow.

Let me reiterate: I don't want Alex Smith. I want Geno Smith. But to say that Alex Smith and Matt Cassel are the same guy is simply not true. Nobody is as bad as Matt Cassel.

Nobody.

Obviously if it was last year and we had the first pick then we would draft andrew luck or rg3 but this year is different and i guess we never had that star qb when we had the number one pick. This year is just not a good year to find that surefire star qb. That's a fact. That's why I'm so confused everyone wants geno just cause he's the top qb in this draft. If all of them are below a certain level than we should be okay with drafting a matt barkley or ej manuel and develop him to become a great qb. like i said im not averse to geno i just don't think he'll be there in the second round and he's not a first rounder because u can just get a qb and develop him with reid. Everyone's stuck on geno though, as if he was a rg3. I think we just want to make him out to be that guy because of our qb woes.

Here's the problem with your argument: Who is the star player the Chiefs should draft who "deserves" to be the overall #1 pick? Jarvis (spinal stenosis) Jones? Star (heart condition) Lotulele? Manti (slow, weak and crazy) Te'o? Luke (we already have two very good offensive tackles and don't need him at all) Joeckel?

Why not draft Geno Smith? Should we say "It sure sucks to have the #1 overall pick! Damn it, I wish we had the #3 or the #10 overall pick so we could get the player we really need and want?"

This. Just cause you don't want alex smith doesn't mean you have to twist the truth and say that alex smith is worse or on par with cassel. Nobody is worse than cassel.

You're just listening to the pundits. If you did your homework on Geno you would know he was over 70% accurate last year, didn't make many mistakes which was reflected in his TD/INT ratio, and is probably the smartest guy coming out of this draft. It is simply beyond me that all of these talking heads aren't all over his jockstrap as the number 1 guy in the draft.

Well the analysts say that Geno shouldn't be a top 10 pick for a reason. I'm sure that these other players like joeckel are much better players available when u pick first. I want to go best player available and from what i hear everywhere that's DEFINTELY not geno. I'm okay with this because we can get alex smith for a year or two and andy reid is good at developing anyone to be great.
