Nvidia Shield
So I’m considering getting a new streaming box. Apps I want are YouTube TV, MLB.TV, Netflix, Hulu. I also want to be able to watch Reddit streams of hockey, boxing, etc. So far the NVidia shield is the one that meets all my criteria. Fire TV has everything except YouTube TV due to a pissing contest between Amazon and Google. Roku has all the apps but can’t watch Reddit streams (that I know of). Same with Apple TV (I think). I have a cheap China android box that technically works, but the UI is clunky and it is sluggish. Anyone have the Nvidia shield? If so, thoughts?

I have one and it is the best streaming box you can buy. I'm a bit of a tech junkie so I have a Fire TV, Apple TV 4k, Xbox and the Shield. I use the Shield 95% of the time on my main tv and the Fire has been regulated to before bed viewing on my bedroom tv.

On the Shield, just about any app can be added if you are willing to sideload. Sideloading is also much easier than a Fire Stick or Fire TV. The Apple TV has the best OS, but it is just not as good for the content I like (Kodi, IPTV Providers, and Streaming APKs like Cyberflix).

Thanks. I’ve been an on and off again Kodi user over the years. Used to use sports devil but finding live sports streams on Kodi is a pain when the Reddit streams from a web browser are easier to use and better quality. Still use Kodi occasionally for movies. I have it on my cheap no name android box. Had it on a fire stick but it ran like crap. I also like that the shield has an Ethernet port where my fire stick only uses WiFi.

Questions: how user friendly is it? My cheap android box has just android and not android tv. I have a remote with a built in mouse pointer. While it works, it isn’t the best experience. I assume the shield functions better as it was designed for a tv. Also, do you know if a Logitech harmony remote will work with the shield?

The Android TV UI is not the best, but it does work. I just put everything I use in favorites and scroll until I find what I'm looking for. I have not had a box with the basic Android OS so I can't compare the two.

I have a Harmony Elite with the Hub and it works perfectly. I do use a Logitech Keyboard as well for when I am looking for reddit streams and it makes it much easier.

I'd recommend downloading Samsung's web browser. It's the best I have found on there. The only downside is you can't go to Apps to find it, you launch it from the sideload launcher....it would be nice to have all Apps able to be added to favorites.

Shield all the way. It's worth the money if you're really contributing to those streaming services. In addition, the Shield is actually very capable with Android games. You can download/sideload them and play for free if you're feeling piratey. It has its own voice command remote. If you've used an Android TV environment, you'll be fine with the Shield as far as navigation and ease of use.

They're pricey, but they'll do anything you want, and it's a very heavily supported open source environment that ensures stability and the most versatility you'll find.

They are great. I’ve had once since original launch and got another after redesign for bedroom TV. One addition to what others have already said is that they receive excellent support from Nvida in actually updating the OS software constantly.

How is web browsing? Specifically, I’d want to be able to navigate reddit for links to game streams and play them. Is there a mouse pointer app?

It just depends on your input method. The included remote doesn't have an airmouse capability. Just up and down buttons. But you can buy lots of remotes that do. Browsing itself is fine. Just as fast as any other device.

I'd recommend looking into a remote with airmouse, voice, and keyboard. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Updated-FeBit...r_1_fkmrnull_4

It makes navigation and input much easier...

OT but is there a good Kodi addon for live sports any more? SportsDevil was dead last time I checked but that’s been a year or so

Afraid not. Live sports plugins have a very short lifespan in Kodi and at this point I don't think that will ever change...
