Football Going for the record: most leaguewide points in a season.

Do you think the league will break the record this year on a points per team per game basis?

We had an interesting discussion in this thread a while back: http://www.chiefsplanet.com/bb/showt...ht=1948&page=2. In Post #58, I put up the highest scoring average in league history as follows:

The 1948 season was the highest-scoring in NFL history on a per-game basis, even higher than 2013 (which is the second-highest). The top ten scoring seasons in NFL history are:

1948 - 23.6 ppg.
2013 - 23.4 ppg.
1965 - 23.1 ppg.
1950 - 22.9 ppg.
2012 - 22.8 ppg.
1949 - 22.7 ppg.
1958 - 22.6 ppg.
1952, 1962 - 22.3 ppg.
2011 - 22.2 ppg.
1947, 1963, 1964, 2008, 2010 - 22.0 ppg.

Do we think the league will go above 23.6 points per game this year?

As of Week 1, the league is currently at a measly 22.3 ppg pace, which makes it top 8 of all time. I blame most of that on Jamaal Charles not getting enough carries.

As I remember, I'll update this as the season progresses, or other people can update it.

Chiefs wont help the average in any way other than the opposing team putting up 30+ that could average out too 22.1

The trend I remember hearing years ago, but haven't verified in any way, is that offenses gain strength throughout the year. Theory on "why" being that they take more time to gel, and that they gain more of an advantage from seeing weaknesses and tendencies of other teams' defenses come out in real games. So maybe there's still hope.

They pulled it back up to 22.3 as of Week 3, but they're going to have to ramp it up notably to break the record. Right now they're tied for eighth, and that's not going to be acceptable to the nonprofit league office.

We stayed at 23.2 in Week 5, and I'm thinking this season may not break the record. We needed to gain 0.2 or 0.3 for me to be confident, and just held pace. I blame Geno Smith for this since the Jets almost singlehandedly destroyed this week's otherwise spectacular numbers.

We're still holding at a #3 all-time ranking.

Week 6 was a good week for the league's marketing team. High scoring in almost every game brought the average up to 23.4 points, moving up to 2nd place all time.

However, Week 7 is looking like a disaster for the Goodell team. So far, the games are all low-scoring compared to the average. Look for the late games to get a call from the league to ramp up scoring.

Week 7 was a disaster for the NFL marketing team as there were very few high-scoring games. The season average plummeted to 23.1 points, which drops 2014 into a tie for the third highest-scoring season ever. This is unacceptable for a league that is currently striving for nonstop scoring.

Week 8 was good for the marketing office, pulling the average all the way back up to 23.3. That's still only in third place all time so I'm sure that heads are rolling, but it puts them back up to striking distance of second if Week 9 is high scoring.

I haven't been able to update recently, but going into the Monday night of Week 11, the league has really dropped off. They're at 22.9 ppg per team, which is only tied for fourth all time. Goodell must be furious.

Before today, the 2014 season had moved up to 3rd place all time, but this week will drop it back down to 4th, most likely. The season is going to be a failure. It will be almost impossible to get above the top two seasons.

On a positive note for the league, this season is higher scoring than 98 percent of NFL seasons, but that won't be enough. Casual fans who don't understand football want to see more scoring.
