Ozzy: Being in a band is dying art
Do you agree?
Ozzy Osbourne says the rise of technology in music means bands are losing the ability to jam and shape ideas together. And the Black Sabbath icon – who's the subject of a free TeamRock iPad supplement – has first-hand experience of the phenomenon. Ozzy tells Noisey.com: “The computer age is taking over and there's a lot of trickery. I've actually seen guys in bands. You go, 'Do you want to jam?' and they go, 'Jam? What's that?' Just playing anything together. They can't do it. 'I'll have to consult my computer first.' The art of being in a band is dying.” The singer says he's always proud when another musician is influenced by Sabbath – and he doesn't just mean by the music. He says: “I have people at Ozzfest going, 'Man, if it wasn't for Sabbath... we owe you so much.' I go, 'What part of this is influenced by Sabbath?' I get where they're coming from but it's not the music, it's what it says to the people. “Metal has never had any rules. If you want me to do something, tell me not to. I've never played by any rules. My sole concern is to get on that stage and give the audience a great day out. I want to give my heart and soul when I play, and that's God's honest truth.” Ozzy recently released his retrospective set Memoirs Of A Madman – after revealing that Sabbath are gearing up to record their final album next year. http://classicrock.teamrock.com/news...d-is-dying-art |

Ozzy is a great name, a great character with a unique voice and a one of a kind, once in a lifetime image, capable of generating huge sums of cash on name recognition alone. He was so ****ed up from 1971-1991 that even he admits that he doesn't remember much from a 20 year stretch, which includes the time he tried to kill his wife in a drunken rage... I don't see a person in that frame of consciousness being much help at any stage of the actual songwriting process. It's just...part of the deal with writing for an Ozzy record is...Ozzy gets a songwriting credit (because that's where the money is) and you get to have your song on an Ozzy record and share credit with Ozzy, and his producer and guitar player (because that's where the money is...)

But if the sound of his last couple of records, and the sound of his auto-tuned vocals on the latest Sabbath slab are any indication, Ozzy doesn't care - he does whatever the producers tell him. Which is a shame, because Ozzy likes old records. He likes the Beatles and Hendrix.

Ok,cos. Your hearts in the right place but Ozzy was asked to leave Sabbath after the brutal 78' Never Say Die Tour with upncomers Van Halen. Ozzy was at his worst physically. Also, you can be a vocalist and jam with other musicians. The voice is an instrument if used as such.

I don't think there are any shortage of bands. So Ozzy's wrong on that score. If he has a beef with how some types of music are being created , well, that's just a person out of touch with current reality. Which isn't much of a stretch , considering the source.

I believe that he has so little to do with his own marketing and product that he had no clue. So, it leads me to believe that lack of involvement extends to...well, everything - look at him.

There were press releases from his wife at the time that it happened saying it was because they were being harassed by his former band mates. I find it incredibly hard to believe that with the lawsuits, the publicity of the rereleases and the interviews that took place around that time that Ozzy could have been unaware. Hell, it was his current band that redid the tracks. He's a liar. It's odd to feel disappointed in the morals of a guy who bites the heads off of small creatures, but I am. |
