What's your favorite board game?

My son is getting older and we're able to play games that the wife and I can play. Right now we're on a Monopoly kick. What are some good fun board games you guys enjoy. I heard Apples to Apples is fun as well, might give it a try.

That would stand out as the best day of my life if it happened to me.

As far as board games, I don't play much any more. I have some classic wargames that I love (Conquistador and Tobruk) from the 1970s/1980s.

I played a modern board game recently that was a lot of fun. It was Wits and Wagers. It might be a little old for a child, but essentially they describe something that is measured with a number, and everyone makes their guesses. Then you bet on who's the closest. So the question might be something like, "The number of soldiers in Genghis Khan's army" and everyone makes their guesses.

For a small child, it's hard to beat Life and Yahtzee as classics.

It used to be Pushing Frankie Over the Edge, but we never get to play that anymore.

if you look closely at the marbles, you can see translucent images of matt castle's cute smiling face, another with scooter's cute dimples, there's one in there that doesn't show a face, but instead we see a football being held on its point to the ground by a player's finger....

Thanks for the inputs. We went to Target and picked up Clue, Stratego, and Apples to Apples (Junior). We'll give those a try. I'm sure the next one we buy will be Sequence.

I can't believe Settlers of Catan hasn't been suggested. I figured it would be one of the first.

The aforementioned Stratego was my big fave way back when I was a teen and dinosaurs ruled the earth. I also liked an old game called 'Pente' - a modified version of an Asian board game not unlike 'Go'. Go has lots of strategy, or as I usually call mine 'stragedy'. Pente is a little simpler, but fast - and fun.
Backgammon was really popular when I was in college, seemed to fade out after that...still fun.

Huh - this looks like an online site for folks who like to play Pente against each other. http://www.pente.net/

I had almost forgotten about Pente. We had that one in our arsenal too, and I always enjoyed it.

Monopoly and Risk are classics, but they're not very well designed. Monopoly relies on people negotiating, and if they don't it lasts way too long, plus a game where losers gets knocked out early isn't as fun. Risk is uneven in that the people who most enjoy it are the ones who've figured out the math and just mercilessly crush their opponents.

I really like Talisman. It calls itself a fantasy quest board game, where each person plays a different type of medieval-fantasy-ish character (the Warrior, the Wizard, the Ghoul, and so on) competing to complete a quest. Easy to learn and fun to play. The downside is that it's expensive (especially if you start buying all of the expansions) but I enjoy the storytelling and adventure aspects of it, and games rarely repeat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talisman_(board_game) (You'll want the fourth edition.)
