Well, most of us knew back in the 70s that the intro to "Bring it on Home" was Sonny Boy Williamson, but the rest of the song was Led Zeppelin. They only "stole" that intro as a tribute. Most people were smart enough to understand that.

As far as the Spirit song, it is similar, but I don't believe it is any more similar than hundreds of other rock songs are to the songs that inspired them. Chord changes aren't copyrightable, or else there would be THOUSANDS of lawsuits since some chord changes, like I-IV-V and I-II-V have been used in thousands of songs. The lawsuit is about money, not music. Randy California knew about Stairway and didn't sue when he was alive, it is his greedy relatives suing now.

From a bass players perspective I think both John Paul Jones and John Enwtistle were among the greatest bassists in rock. But they were very different, and played different roles in their respective bands.

JPJ played brilliantly and is my favorite of the two because he is a traditional groove player that can shred while still holding that groove down and holding the songs together. Much like his biggest influence the legendary James Jamerson. As a working professional bass player I make my money from laying down the groove, so these are the guys I learned from.

Entwistle was a "lead" bass player. The role of groove maker in that band was Pete Townsend on rhythm guitar, while Entwistle went wild over the whole song. Very cool, especially in The Real Me. But only works in specific music written that way like the Who.

I love both bands, but I have always preferred Led Zeppelins music. If you had asked me 30 years ago what my favorite album of all time is I would have said "Physical Graffiti". Ask me today? Same thing.

Led Zeppelin Reissues

Have any of you been picking up the Led Zeppelin Reissues with the companion discs of outtakes and unreleased tracks?

I have not been getting the ultra deluxe versions with vinyl and books; I have just been getting the CD versions with companion discs. I have been using these releases as an opportunity to update my collection and send my older versions to my 13yo nephew to blow his mind.

Anyway, the release dates for the final three albums (Presence, In Through The Out Door, Coda) have been announced: late July 2015.

The companion discs for Coda seem particularly attractive as they will include songs from throughout the bands existence. I am really excited about the Presence release too. So far my favorites from the companion discs are:

Jennings Farm Blues
La La (Intro/Outro Rough Mix)
Gallows Pole (Rough Mix)
Sick Again (Early Version)

I just can't feel Rush. They are great technical musicians, but not something I can draw inspiration from when crafting music or wanting to listen too. Still great band, however.

I agree. I am in awe of their talent, and spent many hours when I was young learning Geddy's bass lines, but now I usually would rather listen to music with more groove and soul.
