The Tyler Bray experiment

It's over. He shouldn't be on the roster when the Chiefs break camp. Sign a backup vet that's sitting on his ass right now.

This experiment should of ended 3-5 years ago. What a collosal waste of time, resources and fresh air on Tyler Bray.

Chiefs fan better hope to God this guy NEVER sees any regular season action...

They need to fire John Dorsey for this abortion of a quarterback.

The deep ball to Conley was nice even if it was waived off. The back shoulder completion was very well done. He made at least two plays where I watched him make progressions before hitting the outlet; the little 7 yarder underneath was especially good in that regard.

The INT was a tough one because it was mental - he tried to make a tougher play than was needed. He picked up a pass-off blitz during his line calls and had Hill breaking underneath for the first but I just don't think he saw him (hard to tell from the stands). If he hits that underneath route its a first down and he's off to the races with a new set of downs.

I won't shovel dirt on him yet. He made two nice passes and showed a better grasp of his progressions than he has in the past. He made a couple bad plays, one off a bad read or missed receiver but it's a backup were talking about. If you get mediocre, you're doing better than most. I think he demonstrated enough ability and enough growth to think that mediocre is exactly what we can get from him.

That sums it up for me as well. I thought he showed marked improvements in nearly every phase. He was calling blitz pickups, threw a freakin' dime to Conley, an excellent back shoulder throw. His posture in the pocket improved, he stopped holding the ball by his hip and he had an overall command of the offense.

I think we also got a good glimpse of his limitations. He's a pocket statue whose accuracy dips considerably when forced to move.

Sometimes a GM makes a bad pick and they know it but they keep them hoping the bad pick will suddenly turn into a good player. Sadly Tyler Bray is not that pick!

The most telling part of that play was his throwing platform. That's where Mahomes shines. As a former baseball player his arm is just conditioned differently. Mechanically he can make throws from different angles and control them. That's invaluable in a scramble drill.

Bray can't do that. That's why his accuracy falls to shit out of the pocket. His arm angle really dipped on that pass and it's because he didn't have a base and doesn't have the arm conditioning that allows him to throw from multiple platforms (oddly enough, Cutler may be the most impressive example of this in the NFL, at least a couple years ago; dude could throw from anywhere).

Without that conditioning, he just flat missed. He'll miss more often than he doesn't because he truly can't control it from those angles - he's guiding rather than throwing (physiologically speaking, he's guessing). That doesn't mean he's worthless, it means hes a damn backup.

Another element that's being overlooked is when he throws he uses his wrist to generate a lot of the velocity like Rodgers or Warren Moon

I agree with DJ's assessment. That pass to Conley was a thing of beauty and he was going through his progressions.. But he tends to get a little careless when he has to move out of the pocket.
I don't believe cutting him and bringing in a vet as backup is the thing to do, however. First, the vet would be expensive and probably wouldn't have time to get much of they playbook down. Second, it only puts another body in front of Mahomes. I believe Mahomes will, at some point this year, become the #2. Why muck up his progress?
