MTV: The Shannara Chronicles

Yeah, I know, I know. I never thought I'd be posting a trailer for an MTV series based on a series of books I don't like, either, but hey, it looks at least a little neat...

OK, made it to about 18 minutes before finally giving up. This show is like nails on a chalkboard.

I have an illustrated version of Wishsong so that kind of set my mental image of him (much taller and more imposing), so I was a little disappointed with Manu Bennett. I actually think he would make a better Walker Boh but he did fine for the show.
It has been a lot of years since I read the series, but when I picture Allanon, I picture someone resembling a taller Hugh Laurie.

I understand why some will dislike the series, as it's very MTV, young-adult-romance, in the vein of other shows like "The Vampire Diaries". But I forgive Terry Brooks for greenlighting this interpretation, because a) if they stuck to the books it would be too close to "LOTR" and b) if you want to be popular and make money with a TV show you have to know your audience.

I found the narrative choppy and confusing--and I've actually read the books, so I can't imagine how newbies followed it--but, again, I understand why they had to jump around, skip some stuff, and invent some stuff. They're trying to build a season-long TV show where every 60-minute block tells a story and adds suspense, plot buildup, and action. If they'd stuck to a strict book interpretation of "Elfstones" the series would probably be pretty boring.

Unlike "Legend of the Seeker", where I had a clear picture of what Richard Rahl would look like--and that actor was not it (although they hit the nail on the head with Kahlan and Cara)--I had no preconceptions of what any of the actors would look like except for Allanon. Allanon, I pictured more like the books portray him: a bit of a Rasputin, tall and thin and looking a bit like the devil. But Manu Bennett grew on me quickly, so I don't mind his version.

The special effects, for TV, are pretty decent. Rhys-Davies adds gravitas as the elf king. The guy playing the Dagda Mor looks more Orc-like than I pictured but IIRC the description in the book was something like a cat muzzle face, which would look stupid. I'm glad they have the Changeling, but I'm hoping they work the Reaper in there somewhere as that was an important character in the book. I'm also glad that Amberle has some balls to her, as the one portrayed in the books was more of a childlike waif (picture more of a Molly C. Quinn from "Castle").

It's not perfect, but it's familiar enough that I'll tune in to see how they continue to tell the story.

I wonder if the little 20-something female actors in the series are going back and binge watching Allanon's nude Crixus scenes from Spartacus.

The dicks were fake in that show. I watched it through a couple months back and they're pretty obviously fake.
