To answer a previous question, the complex would be well within their rights to keep your security deposit, if their fire insurance deductible is higher than your deposit.

If your deposit is more than their deductible, you should get the difference back if they are covered for loss of rents.

However if your complex is small, and you know the owner or something they might take pity on you.

Old wood, new wood, any wood. A small breeze could blow embers on the wood, hell, any number of things could happen. I'm actually surprised something like this didn't happen before. You really shouldn't be smoking on a deck patio at all, particularly a wood one. Sorry this happened man, but geez, I can't believe you did that.
