Competition Committee to true NFL Fans: Get ****ed

From ProFootballTalk:

Quote:
Illegal contact penalties are way up this preseason, the result of the league office telling officials to monitor defensive backs closely and throw flags with impunity. That will continue in the regular season.

“We’re not going to change how we’re calling the games once the regular-season starts,’’ NFL V.P. of officiating Dean Blandino told The MMQB.

I'm the same way, though this is just another domino in the slow process that is losing me as a fan. I cancelled NFL Sunday Ticket and won't make any effort to find an online stream when the games aren't on locally. Hell, I may not even watch all of the other games either.

Until the NFL decides to balance the game out for defenses and reduce the reliance on star QBs to ever win anything, I'm officially a casual fan at best.

Andy Reid and staff may break this trend, but from what we have seen with Alex Smith outside of the playoff game last year, this offense is not a vertical juggernaut... and with these rules in place to help out fantasy numbers, you know this Bob Sutton scheme is going to putting yellow flags all over the field.

The weird thing about this is that it'll actually make defensive players more important, which is the opposite of what you'd expect.

If you make football a game where it's expected to score on every possession, then you can do that with average players. It'll decrease the difference between the Tom Brady QBs and the David Carr QBs, because Tom Brady could score against tough defenses while anybody can score against neutered defenses. So it'll be less important to have a top-notch offense because it's so easy to score.

On defense, the key will be to stop an offense for one or two drives in a game. If you can do that you win, because your offense will be scoring every time it's on the field. So even though defenses are going to look terrible, it'll be more important to have a "good" defense that can give up only 31 points per game instead of 40 points per game.

I don't think I really want to watch games like that, but I think that's what will happen. Let me know, because I'll be outside going for a run on Sundays.

I saw a screen on 3rd and 20 even draw a holding call and auto 1st down. It will easier than ever for them to manipulate wins for the golden boys this year.

The difference is, Tom Brady will get a bogus flag on every single third down to keep his drives going whereas David Carr won't. So it's still more important than anything else that your team gets a marketable glory-boy QB who can draw ref favoritism.

Sounds like basketball (albeit with far fewer scoring chances).

With the way things are headed, if this league folds up in 20 years, I can't say I'd miss it. The NBA and NHL are becoming way more fun to watch, especially playoff hockey.

He sure was last year. What he and the Chargers did last year down the stretch was impressive BUT the Steelers were more impressive and should have been the team with the remarkable run to get in. The Chargers needed "help" and got it from the refs the last game.

Before you point to the Houston game, the right call was made, its just a DUMB rule. The Steelers also got SCREWED against the Ravens late in the seaon by one of those DUMB rules (they overloaded the line of scrimmage on a FG and it was called) Sound familiar?

As you well know I've been an avid FF player since the 90's so I'll take the hit and say I am/was part of the problem, however in all fairness when I started playing defense was still a huge part of the game.

As a true fan of the NFL it does piss me off to see what's become of the league due to FF and as I've stated more than 1000 times it's one of the reasons I believe the NFL is not on the up and up and will do whatever possible in their power to help sway a game to get desired results.

Yep. Just one more way the league is rigged... Brady vs Manning and Rogers vs Brees ought to make "outstanding" conference championship games!

Did some research last year and went back about 10 years on Scores and Odds to look at Vegas over/unders (total points scored in a game) and there were plenty of games that Vegas had put in the 37-40 point range.

Last season it was almost impossible to ever find a game with that kind of over/under.

Exactly!
The beauty part about it is they can sit back and do NOTHING ("miss" a call or just look the other way) to influence the game as well. If so damn EASY to sway a game and have the rules ready to go to validate the process. My favorite one is "YOU CANT REVIEW THE PLAY BECAUSE THE WHISTLE BLEW!"

This is the first time in 15 years that I'm NOT getting NFL Sunday Ticket. I'll watch whatever is on the networks, which means I'll miss many Chiefs games unless I go to a sports bar, but I'm tired of paying to get pissed off watching a manipulated product.
