SSD Hard drives

How many of you have one in your computer?

I have a 2.5 yr old computer with one but my computer guy for some reason didnt put the operating system on it, so I heard Im probably not getting the full effect of it.

Im going to upgrade computers and going to buy another SSD, really only need a 128GB one. Ive been reading that you can keep archived files and stuff u dont really use very much on the regular HD with no problems. Anything I need to know? These things easy to put in and install by an idiot? (Me)

So, I'm looking at Microcenter website and I can't figure out how to determine what SSD you need, or even how to figure out if it's for a desktop or laptop.

I'm probably just going to get a 256GB, and just run the entire computer, OS, and data off that, instead of having two different harddrives (regular and SSD), just to make it simpler for me. That and I can't find another power supply in my computer for another device.

http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...CT256MX100SSD1

http://www.microcenter.com/product/4...id_State_Drive

So which one of these is for a Desktop Computer? It's a T1500 Dell Desktop with custom video card & i-5 processor, 8 GB ram.

SSD's are a standard size of 2.5". There is no distinction between laptop and desktop, AFAIK. The only thing you'll need is a 3.5" to 2.5" bay adapter, or you could just remove a couple 3.5 trays and jerry rig it in there vertically with some zip ties since there aren't any moving parts in an SSD, along with the proper cabling.

EDIT: Just looked at your links. The M550 you have linked is a naked mSATA (mini) drive meant for a notebook. Look at ones with casings like the MX100 you linked that are the standard 2.5" (SATA).

Definitely wouldn't buy the EVO for $34 more than that MX100.

Just picked up a Crucial 256GB from Microcenter. Im gonna try to put it in, and install my OS on it with my existing hard drive and everything. Im a computer reerun so good chance i fry my computer or something.

Who said something about duct tape? That honestly sounds more appealing than messing with these brackets and bays lol

?

You can't copy an existing OS to another hard drive and have it boot. No operating system works that way.

You'll either need to install fresh or make a disc image, then import that image to your new drive.

I'm just going to do a fresh install of Windows 7 on the SSD. And then hook up the regular Hard Drive after and just store big files, and back up the SSD permanent files to it. It will just be a second computer, so not copying any files and don't need to keep anything on the existing regular hard drive.

I've been watching some videos on youtube of computer nerds, seems relatively easy, but I'm sure I'll figure out a way to screw things up.

its super easy to install from scratch. It shouldnt take hardly any time especially if your installing from a USB. The only problem i ever run into is sometimes a 2nd or 3rd hard drive doesnt want to show up, but you can google that for an easy fix, just have to assign a letter to the drive
