Yeah, it's kind of a curious move IMO with Peralta coming on a 4 year deal too and the recent Carpenter extension. It kind of makes me think maybe they're still not sold on Wong and Diaz could be some competition soon at 2B. It seems like once pro scouts started seeing more of him that they weren't quite as high on him and the buzz surrounding him kind of cooled off. It just seems really odd to me to pay probably around $25 million or so to sign what may be the SS of the future when the left side of the infield is locked up for at least 4 years each.

Peralta's deal was front loaded ($30 Million the first two years) and he can be traded. He's our SS for two years. Thats it.

Not my money but does seem like a good bet. You have the money, buy some insurance, place a hedge bet. I'm sick of having a bunch of underperforming SS's. I say we keep drafting, bringin in FA SS until we hit on one. $12 million a year for Peralta in 2016 will not be an amount that keeps a team for trading for him.

Reports on his defense are not glowing. He's likely a 2B. Combine that with Wong's horrendous play after his callup last year and the signing of Ellis, and it doesn't take much skill to read the tea leaves--the organization is not sold on Wong, and shouldn't be.

Wow, I just saw the final terms reported on Diaz's contract: 4-yr $8 million total. That's a LOT less than the $20-$30 million that was being speculated. This deal makes a lot more sense now so let's hope his potential didn't drop as much as his price tag did

Makes me leary of the guy. All the Cuban players are getting at least $20-$25 million gauranteed contracts. Why was there no bigger market than $8 million? I don't think it was just he's not a SS. Has to be more. He's going to need 2-3 years to get up to an everyday MLB player or something.

I saw that game. Wong takes a pitch high and tight up around his head, has to bail out of the batters box. Next pitch he crushes for a two run home run.

According to Derrick Goold, Kelly wins the 5th starter job over CMart. Hugely disappointing, I thought Carlos was great this spring.
Also, I take back what I said about Diaz. He clearly has big-league talent, just needs to play. He'll start at Springfield.

Yep. Carlos day will come. Kelly did well but its obvious to anyone who watches them pitch that Martinez has more upside. That being said, I'm okay with the move. I can see the need to keep Martinez's innings down just like Wacha's last year. Someone falters or we make a mid-season trade and we can plug Martinez in all the way to the end of the playoffs.

Love Joe Kelly. Feel like he deserves a shot. I think we'll still see Martinez starting by the end of the year, similar to what Wacha did last year.

Ken Rosenthal says we offered Miller, Adams and Kozma for Tulo this winter. No way he goes public with this info if its not a damn good source.
I'm damn glad they didn't make that trade. The Rockies were stupid to not take that trade. From Rosenthal: The Cardinals discussed a trade with the Rockies involving right-hander Shelby Miller, first baseman Matt Adams and shortstop Pete Kozma for Tulowitzki before signing free-agent shortstop Jhonny Peralta last offseason, according to a source. Presumably the Rockies also would have included significant cash in the deal; Tulowitzki, one of the game’s best players when healthy, is owed $134 million over the next seven seasons, including a $4 million buyout on a club option for 2021. Gonzalez is owed $63.5 million over the next four seasons.
