If they can keep averaging 12-13 points a game scored by the defense and special teams...you bet your ass they have a good chance.

Yes.
They're a top 5 team in terms of roster talent. Top 10 in terms of execution. Top 10 in coaching talent. Top 5 in terms of wins. Top 5 in terms of ability to create big plays. Top 3 in terms of luck. All in spite of less than eye popping stats outside of turnover differential. All in spite of weathering a ton of significant injuries. While playing in the toughest division in football. While they keep winning despite having a strong strength of schedule, and before today's game have the toughest remaining schedule in the NFL. Yet, somehow they actually are a pretty good road team- meaning there isn't some major dropoff in their success outside the confines of Arrowhead. Bonus points for the fact there is no clear legitimate favorite in the conference this year, and this team might actually be healthier and hitting their stride come January. Do I feel confident they will, not unless the offense can generate around 24 points on average all by themselves. If they can do that, I would lay money on them being in the Super Bowl and at least like their chances walking away victorious. The West isn't even a guarantee, so they have plenty on their plate to worry about before peeking into future what ifs. The last 2 games have been a joy to watch and have the thrill of watching those mid 90s teams- not that I am comparing them.

The running game struggled mightily - I mean it was friggen abysmal. But I don't think that's who they are. And the passing game looked extremely good. Smith missed a pass but it was on an odd play and it was one damn pass. I actually think the throw to Conley was a designed back-shoulder pass if only because I've seen how Smith throws downfield and it's not like that. When Smith goes deep, he does the locked front leg and humps it up and over. He never puts that shallow a trajectory on a deep ball and that's why I think he was intentionally trying the back shoulder, he just didn't realize before he released it that Conley actually had a step. Conley sure made a quick adjustment on it if that wasn't a designed throw. Smith averaged 11 yards per attempt and outplayed Matt Ryan. When he needed to kill the clock he made two strong throws to kill it. Take away Eric Fisher's terrible, horrible, no good very bad day and perhaps Smith's day is even better. He was ****ing good today. And oddly, I was having a conversation with (I think) O.City where we concluded that the way the Chiefs would beat the Falcons would be to play them like the played the Raiders. My concern was that Smith's performance against Oakland was apex Smith; just ruthlessly, brutally efficient. I didn't think he could duplicate it. Well I'll be damned if he didn't do exactly that. Against the two most potent offenses he's faced (or will face) all season, Smith was at his absolute best. That absolutely means something.

Atlanta has a good run d, so I didn't really expect them to run it crazy in Atl, but the pass game was pretty ****ing good.
The chiefs, iirc, ran like 25 less plays than atlanta today and nearly out gained them. |

Yeah, it shouldn't be a shock that we couldn't run. ATL has a good run D, but is dead last against the pass.

Defense always trumps offense in the playoffs. The Chiefs have pulled out two improbable wins in the past two games. Some would say they're lucky. But in football you also make your own luck; some say the Pats were lucky in beating the Rams in '01 in a low-scoring game where Law intercepted Warner, or in '15 when they picked off the Seahawks at the goal line. I think the AFC is pretty much a crapshoot right now: the Pats, Raiders, Chiefs, Ravens, Steelers, or Broncos could all make it to the Super Bowl. And once you're there, anything can happen. Will Dallas make it and have Prescott turn into a rookie at the worst time? Will Seattle make it and, if so, which offense will show up--the Jekyll one that scores a lot, or the Hyde one that can't score?
