The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

Continuing to be a fan of a team that hasn't won shit in 25 years, now THAT is myopic.

News flash: Teams lie. The only thing anybody really knows is that there is a completely unsubstantiated report that says the 49ers have found a trading partner. The report could be wrong. The 49ers could have floated that just to try to make some team panic and make them an offer. Cleveland and/or Jacksonville could be lying.

The only team in this scenario that you definitely know is not lying is the Chiefs, because they haven't said anything.

You probably believed Nick Saban when he said he hadn't had any contact with Alabama, didn't you?

No, that's the expectation for an established veteran like Alex Smith.

Do you see a Colin Kaepernick in this draft?

And that's besides the point. I'm sick and ****ing tired of people pointing to a team that drafted ALDON FREAKING SMITH at #11 overall and compare it to us drafting a shitass like Joeckel at #1 overall. THEN they have the nerve to compare Colin Kaepernick under the tutelage of Jim Harbaugh vs Mike Glennon, Tyler Bray, Ryan Nassib, or EJ Manuel.

They're not even close. One team was a team with a history of acquiring franchise QBs and could afford to take the BPA route, and the other team hasn't drafted a guy since 1983. One team had only Jake Locker available to them, the other team has their pick of ANY of 2013's QBs.

The differences go on and on. So no, that's not an acceptable strategy. It's a weak strategy. It's not considered myopic to demand a team to look at one position and one position only at 1.1 when it's so CLEARLY obvious that's what they should do.

ABSOLUTELY ****ING NOT.

A rookie has a learning curve.

Alex Smith doesn't.

He better win and win often. No excuses.

If Geno is our QB it truly will be an "evaluation" year.

I don't give a shit what our record is next season if Geno is the starter.

If Alex Smith is the QB we better make the playoffs, period.

Considering nobody loves these quarterbacks? It's the definition of myopia. It is shortsighted.

I understand the frustration, but for argument's sake... Setting A. Smith aside, for the time being. Lets say we took Manuel at the top of two, or Barkley if he falls or any number of other QBs. Why wouldn't that satiate our need for a QBOTF?

Look I want a home grown QB as much as everybody else... but this attitude of fan base stomping their feet and holding their breath unless we draft Geno Smith is laughable. Ultimately, we have no control and driving some of us to madness.... Here's to hoping we have hired the right people to make the right decisions.

The people that don't love these QBs are idiots. Those people are the definition of short-sighted.

The Chiefs walked away from Sunday VERY impressed with Geno Smith. So the idea that nobody loves these QBs is false.

Barkley and Manuel would absolutely satisfy our need. But to gamble on them falling is foolish. Arizona already said Barkley won't get past them at #7.

I'm not holding my breath nor stomping my feet. If they don't draft a QB at #1 (and it doesn't HAVE to be Geno Smith, he just happens to be the best choice), I'm walking away.

I'm not into masochism. I've given enough to this shit franchise.

**** no.

Geno Smith's next year will be an adjustment to the NFL. It will either be a small adjustment or a large one. It doesn't ****ing matter.

That's what is wrong with this ****ing fanbase. They're so scared to take a QB because they're scared of going 6-10 or 7-9 the next year.

Guess what? If Alex Smith is our QB next year.....it's Championship game or bust. Just like when Matt Cassel came here. Neither one are/were rookie QBs and neither one get an evaluation period their first year.

I'm glad this has blown over for now. If there truly was something in place, I think Glazer/Schefter would have been able to smoke out more specifics.

Each day that passes without more leaks tells me that the 49'ers are just posturing. Unfortunately for them (and fortunately for us), there really seems to be a small market for Alex Smith. And if that's the case, we just wait it out for the 49ers to release him.

Make no mistake, that's what they'll have to do if they don't work out a trade.
