Looks like NFL might get rid of kickoffs as soon as 2019

5X as many concussions on kickoffs. Looks like we might see an end to kickoffs and maybe punt returns. |

When this idea was floated a while back, I thought the leading idea was that instead of a kickoff the "kick off" team would get the ball and it would be treated as fourth and 5 or fourth and 10. So they could either punt or go for it on fourth down. Is that idea gone? |

I'm intrigued by the idea of eliminating the punt. As in, you always have to go for it on 4th down. It's pretty unlikely (at least in the foreseeable future) since it'd be such a fundamental change to the game, but it definitely wouldn't be boring. I'd be really interested to see the XFL or the Ebersol/Polian league try it.

As long as Dat is in the team, I’m all for getting rid of kickoffs.

So will the NFL lower the number of roster players from 53? They won’t need all these special teams specialists.
The NFL is killing jobs!!!

The game has been trending this way for years now, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it eliminated.
Like others have said, the only problem is onside kicks. If you're down 14 with 2 minutes to go there's zero chance to win. Yeah the chances now are still really small, but it does happen, and we all still watch the game because there's a slim chance for a miracle. |

A team may find itself down 3+ posessions within minutes. And that will happen quite often, facilitating the need for every team to feature a quick strike passing attack.

An example of ruining the quality of the game instead of just figuring out how to make the game safer. Hate it. This is why the nfl needs a competitor league. Wish we could go back to kicking from the 30.

How about just expanding roster spots to allow for special teams only players. Then go back to normal rules. There would be an endless supply and who cares if they get hurt.

Someday the XFL won`t be a joke and could replace the NFL if it keeps on this path
