MLS has also taken the lead in creating all-encompassing brand identities for their teams (The NBA is starting to do this now). They are engaging fans better than any other league on the planet. For instance, MLS just released their new league logo, which (by design) featured a negative space inviting any and all fans to create alternate designs and customize the logo for the team that they supported.

Here's the new logo:

Here's what fans were doing with it online within hours:

Thats actually a terrible idea in terms of brand recognition and helping the MLS grow. Looks like the idea for a pee wee soccer league.

OR, you can purchase a subscription to the league for practically peanuts and watch kick ass, real time HD feeds.

Of the entire league.

At any time.

Sporting KC nailed it on Friday by showing in game highlights of the Royals while at the skc game on the jumbo trip. Hope Royals would do the same or chiefs by showing skc on tv but I doubt it. Sporting KC is always doing things to keep me coming back.

It's not. The brand was completely outdated and old.

This goes along with the trend in design of saying more while literally doing less. It's implementation on the jerseys looks solid as well. It uniquely identifies the league just fine while also giving some love to the club represented at any moment.

In the case of DCU.

But really this is just another example of those that don't understand the league itself or the state of US Soccer thinking for some reason they know more about it and what's right for its marketing decisions than the people running it.

I will say however that a few fans on the Big Soccer board are beginning to grumble about the league getting more popular. One poor dude with ADA seating is getting shafted pretty hard.

I almost always try to stay out of soccer threads. The game doesn't appeal to me, and that's fine. I think most people's issue with soccer stems not from the game itself but the obnoxious, self-promoting nature of its fans who hyperbolically overstate its actual importance and impact in this country.

How much of that is evangelistic, and how much is rebuttal, though?

If the cheer-leading nature of soccer fans is the problem, why the 'I hate soccer, cuz it's boring and I ain't no onewhobitesthepillowtomaskanalpain-got towelhead' opening salvos?

And for the, 'no biggie, but the fans who insist we just don't understand their precious shitty game' crowd; how SHOULD one respond when you understand the game and find it exciting, then people say 'It's boring because nothing ever happens?'

Why don't Shakespeare, or chess, or heck baseball fans face the same scorn.

I don't think that the dislike of soccer is singular. The egregiously stupid reasons to dislike soccer, such as the ones you list above, are held, in my opinion, by a rather vocal minority of ignorant, myopic bastards.

I think a far greater percentage of people who don't follow the sport and have no desire to are turned off by the promoters of the sport, who have always over-promised and under-delivered.

I'm somewhat tired, so I can carry this conversation on in greater length later, but I do believe that some of the dislike of soccer also stems, in part, from reasons given by Chuck Klosterman in an essay I"ve posted here previously--that the soccer most are exposed to here runs counter to the American sports ethos. If you want to wade through it on your own you may find it online; it's called "George Will vs. Nick Hornby".

To your second point, I think you are still responding to a minority of soccer haters that are not proportional to the rest of the sports public that is apathetic and/or annoyed about soccer for other reasons.

I'll try and respond in greater clarity further. Apologies.

The Royals restored the glory to the city yet we're still going back and forth with Sporting KCK. There's room for us both.

I am familiar, and utterly reject the false dichotomy of equality OR competition. The rules of soccer 'enforce equality' by imposing a set of rules that establish that you aren't guaranteed victory solely on the basis of your innate physical attributes. There isn't a player on earth too tall, strong or fast to be stopped. Victory is then decided COMPETITIVELY by game skills and teamwork. You can be a superstar, and your team can be dominant, but it won't as easily be because you were born with physical gifts or you spent your time achieving fitness not relevant to playing soccer with tactic and skill [ie, gym rats].

This is a spur of the moment thought exercise, so don't go out and develop a rebuttal thesis, but imagine for a moment that there was a rule in basketball that no one could handle the basketball directly into a score on offense, unless he took possession outside the 3-point arc. Therefore, from the shortest point guard, to the biggest center, scoring comes from either outside shooting or the dribble drive. No more uni-taskers like Shaq and Ming parking inside, simply existing for the slam, the foul, or the block on D. Everyone has to be a ball handler. Everyone participates in motion offense.

That would be a radically different, more equitable, and still COMPETITIVE sport.

Further, Klosterman thinking that nerds love soccer because they can hide out on the pitch and no one notices demonstrates, with crystal clarity, that INDEED he does not understand the game.
