Paul Kantner, R.I.P

Paul Kantner, Jefferson Airplane Co-Founder & Guitarist, Dies at 74
January 28, 2016

Kantner passed away on Thursday (Jan. 28) of multiple organ failure, following a heart attack earlier in the week.

From 1965-1972, Jefferson Airplane was a pioneer in the Bay Area counterculture psychedelic rock scene, first defining what became known as the "San Francisco sound."

Kantner and guitarist and vocalist Marty Balin formed the band in a bar called the Drinking Gourd, intending the group to be a folk-rock group. Amidst the city's drug experimentation, they developed something far more interesting.

"Jefferson Airplane had the fortune or misfortune of discovering Fender Twin Reverb amps and LSD in the same week while in college. That’s a great step forward," Kantner told author and music historian Harvey Kubernik. "We went into it our normal selves.... The point is if you find something that makes you joyful take note of it. Amplify it if you can. Tell other people about it. That's what San Francisco was about. Both musically, idealistically and metaphorically and every other way. That's what we did here."

As more and more flower children moved to San Francisco, Jefferson Airplane's local following grew and it became the first of the city's psych-rock bands to sign to a major label, releasing its debut Jefferson Airplane Takes Off in 1966. That same year, they became the first band to headline concert promoter Bill Graham's now legendary Fillmore Auditorium.

By the following year, the band's second album, Surrealistic Pillow, became a soundtrack to the Summer of Love. It hit No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with the help of singles "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit," as the rest of the country began following in San Francisco's hippy footsteps.

"On our first U.S. tour we were in cities where all the kids came in prom gowns and tuxedos. Then we came back to Iowa a year later and they were having nude mud love-ins and everybody had their faces painted," Kantner told Kubernik.

Jefferson Airplane performed at the three most famous American rock festivals of the 1960s' -- Monterey in 1967 and Woodstock and Altamont in 1969. In 1996, Kantner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his work with the band.

Kantner is the first of Jefferson Airplane's founding members to have passed away. He was also a founding member of the group's spinoff band, Jefferson Starship. which took off in 1974.

Kantner is survived by three children: sons Gareth and Alexander and daughter China. Funeral arrangements are pending.

But in Aerosmith's defense, at least Tyler, Perry & Whitford actually wrote the songs with the outside writers. As in, they sat down with Desmond Child/Jim Vallance/Tommy Shaw/Jack Blades/Nikki Sixx/et al and wrote songs the old fashioned way. Plus they had guys like Bruce Fairbairn, Brendan O'Brien, Bob Rock, and Caveman Shirley around as producers/engineers/extra tunesmiths etc.

Those guys had a great team around them. John Kalodener gave them the tools to succeed on the highest level. The problem is, that model doesn't work anymore. When Kalodener tried that with the Black Crowes in 1999, it was an abject failure.

Well, kind of.

They could not have recorded those records without the outside writer's, period. And I've actually worked on those song splits because we had Mark Hudson when I was at MCA (and he is the weirdest dude, ever) and they weren't an even 33/33/33.

And the thing is, the public doesn't want to hear new songs written solely by Aerosmith, as their last record proved.

Kate Hudson's uncle is weird??

Say it ain't so! . "Livin' On the Edge!!"

Tyler is a weirdo himself...

As for Aerosmith...they did it to themselves. Hardcore fans didn't care that half of the album was written by Aerosmith and produced by JD like the old days, and pop fans didn't respond to the stuff written by outside people and produced by Marti Frederickson. They wound up with a hodgepodge of an album that was too long, but still never satisfied either camp.

If they wanted to go the pop route, then they should've made a pop album.

If they wanted to make a live-feeling, raw-dog guitar rock record, they should have went whole hog and recorded on 24 track tape and mastered it to tape.

It's the weirdest mongrel of an Aerosmith record. It's the least cohesive record of their career, and that says a lot, when Night In the Ruts, Rock In A Hard Place, and Done With Mirrors exist.

At least those weren't squashed to death in mastering. Music From Another Dimension just didn't sound good. And that's on everyone involved.

Somehow, I think Sony just wanted off the hook. I doubt Aerosmith makes another album of original material, ever.

That's sad, considering the run they had from 73-97.

Dang! All these musicians on here... I only say that because I started out in the working world interning at ABC Dunhill back in the 60s. Some of my best friends were John Kay, Goldy McJohn, and Stephen Kasdan. I starting playing bass because of George Biondo.

Small world.....

My very first supervisor at MCA came from ABC/Dunhill. I'm not sure if she was there in the 60's but I know she was there in the 70's.

They used to do royalty statements by hand in ledger books. No computers.

The old days...

Hell, EVERYTHING was done by hand in those days. My old man was an executive VP of A&R back then and I got to meet most of the big guys. One of the best gentlemen I had the pleasure of meeting was Hoyt Axton. God, that guy was talented! I remember when Russ Allee came in with his "Acoustic Amps". An original 360/361 sits in my basement to this day.

Good times back then. Then I went to Vietnam Nam.....

why? If you have nothing against the guy then respect a R.I.P thread about him.

There has always been an unwritten rule about not being a dick in R.I.P threads. I didn't come up with anything.
