Ten Things About Today's Game: Week 15

Ten Things About Today’s Game: Week 15

10. Let me start by saying, for those of you who went out and sat in ten below wind chill for several hours, only to watch the Chiefs piss away a playoff berth, God Bless You. I’m sure Clark Hunt appreciated you coming out and doing the chop, and spending money, and yelling on third down, and spending money, and not minding that Andy Reid gave the opposition two chances to kick a game winning field goal, and oh yeah, for spending money. God Bless You, seriously. I’ve been there, done that. I’m going to try to remain clear eyed and optimistic after this red and gold piss fest -the second game we’ve lost 19-17 because of an Alice Smiff pick in the end zone and other stupidity. But it's very hard to not be pissed and negative. Oh, there’s plenty of blame to go around on the offense. We’ll get to that.

9. I sold my seats at the last minute because my doctor has told me that at my age and with my health status, doing stuff like sitting in a deep freezer for four hours is not a bright idea; especially if I want to stick around awhile longer. This game didn’t have the stakes of the KC-Indy Kicker Who Will Remain Nameless playoff loss, or the Elvis Wets his pants in the Two Minute Drill ice bowl playoff loss vs. Denver. It doesn’t end our season, but it certainly puts a big ass dent in our chances of a first round bye. I’m sure Clark is very upset because most fans are on the “pay as we play” playoff plan, and this loss cost him millions of dollars in ticket sales and accrued interest. I’m sure Andy will stand up and give us the ole standard “I take responsibility for this” speech. But what does that mean? Will there be any consequences? No. Why? Because this organization is not about winning. It’s about “competing.” You can't be absent from the championship game in your sport for going on 50 years and claim otherwise with a straight face. When the team is up by 14 points eleven minutes into the game, at home, and can’t hold that lead, then your team, top to bottom, has no clue how to be a champion. Not a clue. If you can’t make a yard on the one foot line twice with your biggest running back from the goal line, you don’t deserve to win. If you run your opponent out of time outs, and just need a single first down at home to ice the game and you can’t make a third and two, you don’t deserve to win. If your vaunted pass rushing tandem of Hali, Houston and Ford combine for ZERO sacks in a game that can clinch a playoff appearance, you simply don’t deserve to win. The defense forced three turnovers and the offense turned that into seven points. Seven. Not good enough to win. Period.

8. Kansas City has $18 million tied up on Schwartz and Fisher. Who was the best blocker today? Neither. The Canadian Doc was. The offensive line as a whole was putrid in short yardage blocking. Ware had 15 yards rushing at halftime. KC was 4 for 14 on third down -two for seven in the first half, two for seven in the second half-, missing on multiple third and shorts. Colquitt punted six times. KC's drives in the second half was one pick and five punts. KC had multiple pass plays again for negative yardage. We throw more passes for negative yards than just about anybody.

7. I’m still convinced that we will never win anything significant with Alice Smiff. Look at our two home losses: Both to young, Heisman Trophy winning, franchise QBs with a bright future. Our other two losses are to teams who are both leading their divisions, Pittsburgh and Houston. Smiff’s killing pick in the end zone was telegraphed, and if he throws that ball away that’s probably three additional points and we most likely win the AFC West. To his credit, Smiff’s receivers are doing him no favors. KC’s receivers are fourth worst in the NFL in dropped passes. Smiff did run for one TD, but his QB rating was 56.1. That’s awful. Smiff has only thrown 12 TD passes 15 weeks into the season. That sucks and is an embarrassment. His top performance was throwing two TD passes in one game. Matt Moore, a journeyman career backup with Miami, threw four TD passes against the Jets last night. Getting shut out in the second half, at home two weeks in a row, in December, is inexcusable. Alice averaged less than six yards per completion today. Both starting corners for the Titans were out, and Smiff could only throw for 163 yards, and didn’t complete a single pass to Ty Hill. I could go on and on. Of course, defense and special teams have contributed almost 50% of our scoring up to today's game. Today, we got no points from the defense or the specials, and we lost. Big surprise.

6. Where KC was having trouble rushing for more than two yards on short yardage, the Titans rushed Murray and Henry for 148 yards and two TDs, and had several big runs for more than ten yards a clip. KC’s defense is the worst in the NFL for giving up runs from scrimmage of over ten yards. Poe had no tackles. Our three leading tacklers were defensive backs: Berry, Nelson and Parker. Mariota got his team going in the fourth quarter hurry up and scored 12 points to KC’s zippo. Winning the fourth quarter wins games. Who looked like they wanted it more today? They did. And they won. And for those of you who say “well, if 20,000 pussies who didn’t brave the weather would have showed up, we would have won,” all I can say is, all that would have done is made it a lot harder for you frozen, pissed off fans to get out of the icy parking lot to get home. You can’t make a lot of noise when you’re dressed like the Michelin Man. So you can stuff that logic. I don't fault the fans that were there or the ones that weren't. This crap falls on man number one thru eleven, not the 12th man.

5. I didn’t think it was possible for Andy to be bested in time management in the second half, but by God, he managed to F it up. Tennessee had blown all their time outs on confusion and lost challenges. They played the last half of the fourth quarter with no remaining time outs. Icing Succop was monumentally stupid. Succop is a veteran kicker. He knows Arrowhead like the back of his hand. He’s either going to hit the kick, or not hit the kick. And if you ARE going to ice him, don’t give him a practice opportunity so he can make adjustments on a second attempt. Succop, btw, is the Chiefs all time leader in kicking percentage. His 53 yarder had to be sweet for him after we whacked him for the Midget. You think the midget would have hit a 53 yarder for us if we needed it today? Doubt it; he’s been having trouble hitting extra points. Congrats to Succop on nutting up for his team when given a second chance. That's what winners do.

4. Do I have any good things to say today? Yeah, Wilson played fairly good subbing for DJ. He certainly played as good as Houston, Ford or Hali. Ty Hill had a 68 yard run from scrimmage that was beautiful. For you young guys, if you ever wondered what Joe Delaney looked like on a running play, he was like that. Once he hit a hole, he was Gone Daddy Gone. Berry made a great play to strip a ball right before the end zone to save a TD. Parker had a very pretty one handed pick. Chris Jones had one sack and stopped the two point conversion. Maclin was a factor with six catches. Kelce only had three catches and overall didn’t do much. DAT should be cut at the end of the year. In the fourth quarter he lets a ball hit him between the one and the three, bounce off his chest wide open for a sure first down. Then to add to the effort, jumps offside on the punt attempt on the next play. Great job of focus in the fourth quarter, dipstick.

3. On injuries, Harris tweaked an ankle, Peters tweaked a groin. Both returned to the game, but both will be questionable against the Donks. No Phillip Gaines again this week. Think you have to get rid of that guy, he’s made of china. Mitchell’s been about as good although he had a painful DPI in today’s game. He’s shown more ball skills than Gaines. Nachos-Roaches played a bit, but not much. I think Poe is messed up. He had one QB pressure, but did nothing for most of the day. We sure miss DJ, that’s for sure.

2. Andy Reid should be kicked in the crotch repeatedly by every fan that had to sit through that crap today. How ultra conservative can you go on offense? How can you NOT score a single point in the second half, two weeks in a row, at home, in a playoff month? It looks like he is so untrustworthy of Smiff that we never just cut it loose. Tennessee was missing ALL of their starting CBs today. They’re one of the worst teams in the league against the pass. Smiff can’t even throw for over 200 yards against them, mostly because of the dink and dunk play calling. I can’t say Smiff is a Grbac clone. Yeah, Grbac was a pants wetter (see Arrowhead ice bowl vs. Denver) but at least Grbac could throw long occasionally. But like we’ve said during the course of the season, if you want a guy to put the team on his back, and, oh, I don’t know…make A THIRD AND TWO to ice a playoff berth, then he is not your guy. And he never will be. I say, bring on the next contestant, and the Kansas City Chiefs appreciate your support, loyal Chiefs Kingdom. By the way, spend $100 in the on line gift shop and they’ll give you a free $2 Chiefs key chain!

1. This team realistically should be around 7-7 and in the middle of the rest of the AFC mediocrity. We should have lost at Denver, Carolina and the home opener vs the Bolts. But we got lucky all three times. If you can’t run the ball in December, you lose. We lost to a team who wanted it more and played to win instead of playing not to lose. But be of good cheer, the Chiefs have only been absent from the Super Bowl for 46 years. If we do manage to sneak into the playoffs, we’ll probably be a road team, like last year. And we may win one game on the road, like we did last year. And we’ll get beat by a better quarterback, just like last year. This one is going to sting for awhile. On a positive note, next week Scho63 is coming in from Virginia to attend the Denver Game with Mrs. Blowfish and me on Christmas Night. Hopefully it won’t be five below zero, and we’ll play better. But we usually don’t play well on National TV, so I'm not particularly optimistic. If it comes down to having to go to San Diego; having to beat Phyllis to sneak into the playoffs, it’ll be a bleak start to 2017. Hope to be more positive soon, but you can only get bashed in the face with a frying pan so many times before you learn to duck.

Time to let it go and get onto beating the Broncos.

After watching this team since it moved to Kansas City, I am starting to become numb to it and realize this it's all so meaningless. Billionaires making people Millionaires to sacrifice their bodies for the entertainment of Thousandaires.

It is amazing the number of ways this team finds to win AND lose games.

Yeah, **** it. It's just entertainment, like the WWF. As long as the checks cash and the players don't put a gun to their head when they're 40, then, who gives a rats ass?

Pats win on the road, Oakland wins to clinch a playoff spot, Pittsburgh comes back from 14 down, those teams all have a shot at the Super Bowl. If, and that's a big if, IF the Chiefs make it in, we'll end up going to somewhere like Miami or Houston, maybe win, then get crushed by the Pats in Foxboro again. We probably lost all chances at a home playoff game today. I'm not sure how it's all going to shake out.

Spot the **** on, as usual. I am so sick of watching this team play down to it's competition, only to have Andy out think himself and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Think about whom we've lost to this year. Houston, Pitt, TB, and Tennessee. 3 shit show franchises and 2 of those losses were in the once hallowed halls of Arrowhead stadium. Every time this team gets you to believing again, they pull the football just like Lucy in the OP. Great ****ing analogy.

One of these years the Chiefs will quite possibly win a Super Bowl. At this point I'm not sure it will mean a ****ing thing to me by then because I'll have already invested as much heart, soul, and money into this team that I can spiritually afford before my apathy levels climb to a point of not being invested by the time that it happens.

Steadman had to beg Lamar to bring in somebody who knew what the **** they were doing with football, because he had no clue. He knew how to build a stadium and an amusement park, but no clue how to build a team. So they bring in King Carl, then Pioli, now Dorsey. They go through a plethora of coaches with a shockingly bad playoff record leading KC. They make it to ONE AFC Championship game in 47 years. They've never played an AFC Championship game in Arrowhead. The constant in all this is the Hunt Family. They've drafted ONE first round QB, and nobody since 1983. They've tried FIVE re-tread QBs from San Francisco. Meanwhile, every team in our division have been to the Super Bowl, some have won it multiple times, since our last appearance. You can't say this franchise is committed to winning when you look at the history. I used to say the Chiefs were the Chicago Cubs of the NFL. I can't say that any more. The Cubs figured it out. Now the Chiefs stand with Detroit and Cleveland in epic futility. And if you believe they're going to be better this year than last year, God Bless You, but it's certainly looking like the same old crap in a brand new box.
But 99% of those complaints rest with Lamar, RIP

Give Clark credit where its due is all I'm asking, he didnt go shopping at Wal-Mart when he took over... he has consistently tried to find the very best available

With all due respect, I absolutely disagree... every single NFL coach would've tried to ice the game winning kick

Andy Reid made it to one Super Bowl and lost. He may have been the best available hire then (gee, Todd Haley didn't go to a Super Bowl?), but now, guys like Cowher or Gruden, or Dungy, who have all actually won Super Bowls, are not coaching. Are they available? How much money does the Hunt family have? Back up a Brinks Truck if you have to.

Clark Hunt has not drafted a QB in the first round, just like his daddy. That is a constant.

And on the icing the kicker thing, I don't have a problem with calling the time out, just do it before he gets a practice kick. That was incredibly stupid.

I Do.

You think you are the only who is suffering??

I have been a fan since 1973 as a little kid wanting to be Len Dawson..

I had season tickets when I lived in OPKS in the 80s and 90s.

I have spent 10s of thousands of $$$ since over the years traveling to "Mecca" to support the Chiefs.

I have been through coaches:

(Had forgotten about Bettis. He was worthless.)

I have not given up as you appear to have.

(You have great seats. My offer still stands. Want to sell them for the Denver game? Or the Season Tickets rights?)

You need to recharge. You sound like Oakland Hater or Rabblerouser or Laz.

We need you back.

If you've got so much money to burn, why not become a Red Coater, and get into a cozy country club meeting with Clark, and talk him into buying a roof for Arrowhead, and getting a goddamn QB that's not a 9ers re-tread? It's only a matter of time before we see Kaepernick sniffing around St. Joe, as another of Andy's Michael Vick type reclamation projects.

Yeah, I'm pissed. I'm running out of years, and I'm tired of losing. I've seen this movie. It's like watching Christmas Story every December.

Perspective... Perhaps, although I get just as pissed off as anyone. I used to believe that the Chiefs would win before the Royals because of how baseball favors the large market teams. I read an article on football purgatory which sums up the Chiefs; never quite good enough to win it all yet never quite bad enough to get the type of player that will put you over the top.

It is true that the other teams in our division have all been to the Superbowl since the Chiefs however those teams have also been so bad that they were able to draft players that made a difference on offense. The Chiefs seem to keep making the same choices and expecting different results. Some have said this is the definition of insanity.

I am choosing differently about the team I am a fan of. No expectations, just wanting to enjoy the ride.

Enjoy!

Cowher was adamant about not coaching again and has stuck to that, you can bet others have tried to lure him out of retirement to no avail

Gruden took Dungys giftwrapped all world defense, then simply made their offense decent

And Dungy? c'mon man

The first round QB thing... no argument

Again, I will respectfully disagree, every NFL coach would've iced the kicker... BUT, you're right about not letting him get the first one off

I stand corrected

With all due respect, I absolutely disagree... every single NFL coach would've tried to ice the game winning kick

CrazyKirk... Billionaires, millionaires, thousandaires

Good stuff

Thanks for providing some perspective

Craig Sager saw the Cubs win it all. Royals won a championship. Cleveland won a ring. Why not KC?

David Glass is a better owner than the Hunts. Let that sink in.
