Both have had their share of adversity, too. You hear about teams like the Padres, Nationals, Mets & Cubs and how they've improved, but when the dust settles, those 2 teams will most likely be standing again.

Since you're argument assumes it is, let's take that to its logical conclusion: his xFIP is almost a run better than last year. His FIP is nearly half, he's striking out more batters and walking fewer.

In fact, his stuff is now so bad against lefties that they have a .000 ISO and a .513 OPS against him.
Hey, Choate threw more shit last night.

Yes, velocity does tend to stabilize about a month in. And the only reason he's only thrown 5.1 innings is because he can't actually get anyone out. It's far more than a little disingenuous to cite '5.1 innings' without acknowledging that it's been fifteen appearances, don't you think?

The guys is done. You're welcome to keep trotting him out there to get about 3 outs/week if you'd like and then pretend that doesn't have anything to do with our short bench and tattered bullpen, but you'd be being extremely naive and ultimately just dogmatic for the sake of being so. There's no way you can credibly assert that Choate and Maness are of remotely similar value.

No one cares about the Indians ever.

Chris Perez pretty much got run out of town when he called out Indians fans for putting about 18,000 people into a beautiful stadium when they were in first place about 5 years ago, but he was dead on right.

I give Royals fans grief for being blatant frontrunners (this board as as many examples as you need find), but at least they did bother to show up...eventually. Indians fans, OTOH, just never bother at all.

Yeah.

They'd have to pay him, but sunk costs are sunk costs.

If Matheny insists on a second lefty, bring Cooney back. He's at 89 as a starter but would probably be 91 as a reliever with a lot more snap on his breaking ball if he's not trying to pace himself as much. As a starter, he's worked on getting out righthanders as well and his arsenal (notably his sinking fastball) would allow him to work to a RH here and there to stay in the game to face another couple of lefties, depending on the batting order. He's can be sensibly deployed - Choate cannot.

Or if/when Garcia/Gonzalez are ready, put Lyons in that role. I think his stuff plays extremely well as a lefty reliever.

Ultimately I don't see a 2nd lefty as that critical, at least not during the regular season. They'd be better served carrying another versatile righty (like Harris) and putting an additional bench bat back on the team. With sinkerballers like Maness and Belisle, not to mention that cutter from Harris, you have guys that can deal with most rank and file lefties. With Siegrist you can get through the nasty lefties on the team once in the 7th or 8th and set it up for Rosenthal.

On Sunday when we were rolling Pete Kozma up there in a key situation in the 9th to try to tie it, I feel like the book was closed on how Matheny's managing this bench/bullpen right now. You just can't carry 13 relievers and you damn sure can't do it if your bench includes 2 injured guys, a backup catcher you won't use and Pete Kozma, who just blows.
