Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

I enjoyed Daybreakers a decent amount for what it is. Well worth a rental if it seems like something you would like.

I agree.

Legion, not so much. Seemed like all the good scenes were in the trailer.

They both intrigue me. Even with the unfavorable reviews.

Been on my "to see" list for a while. That and a hell of a lot of other things. Netflix re-up here we come.

I read they're making Men in Black 3 in 3D. This way you can feel like you're actually in a crappy movie.

I just watched Departures, the winner of the 08/09 Oscar for Best Foreign Film, again. I hadn't seen it since it played at the Tivoli in KC over a year ago. What a superb film. It is nearly flawless. You owe it to yourself to see this film. It is streaming in HD through Netflix.

I find it interesting that the two best films that I saw in 2009 were Japanese films (Still Walking and Departures).

Thanks for the suggestion of Departures. Just put a hold on it through my library.

I had very low expectations for Legion and it exceeded them. Not a great movie, but enough good action to be a decent investment of time.

The best scenes were definitely in the trailer so avoid the trailer if you haven't already seen it.

I just watched Bronson. I can't recommend it. While Tom Hardy gives a physical, engrossing lead performance the film itself is sloppy, boring and inconsequential.

I don't think it even rose to that level, I haven't been less impressed in a movie in quite a while.

I also got around to The Book of Eli finally and was fairly disappointed. It had a couple of cool action scenes but they not only seemed out of place with the rest of the movie they didn't even seem to go with each other. The fight at the house toward the end specifically. Just was a messy waste IMHO.

I saw "The Secret in Their Eyes" last night and it was really excellent. Easily among the top I have seen of the 2009 crop. It seems like it might be a typical murder mystery but the layers to the story and great performances just work.

An aside - the damn indy theaters around here are now $10 despite their very aging equipment and smallish screens. Guess I should just be happy that stuff like this is available but still irritating at the same time.

I haven't been able to see it yet. I was skeptical about it winning the Oscar over A Prophet or The White Ribbon.
