Football Why are fumbles out of the end zone lost possessions? - Page 5

Football experts: What is the rationale behind giving the defense the ball via touchback after a fumble out of the end zone? Yesterday as we all know Bryce Brown was stripped as he was about to cross the goal line. The Buffalo player did not recover (he was the only one even with a chance) and it was Chiefs ball.

It makes perfect sense to lose possession fumbling out of YOUR end zone but why punish the offense for doing it so close to scoring? If you want to punish them then give Buffalo the ball at the 20 and say "Close but try again".

Some will say they believe the Chiefs should be rewarded but why? We didn't recover the ball either. And if Brown was stripped and it veered to the pylon a foot before the goal line before being out, they keep it. So we aren't rewarded in that case.

If you fumble it out of bounds anywhere else without the other team touching it, you keep possession. That's impossible to do in the end zone because you'd have to rule it a TD. Technically the Offense would have possessed the ball in the end zone until the end of the play, resulting in a score. So the only way to avoid awarding a TD is to give possession to the other team.

Anywhere else on the field, the offense keeps the ball at the spot of the fumble. If it goes through the end zone, the team that fumbles is penalized 20 yards and a turnover.

Bottom line---Stuff that happens in the end zone is treated differently than not in the end zone.

We have at least established its not a "reward" for Parker's strip. Since we'd have gotten it had Brown high stepped it untouched and dropped it on his own.

Why are people acting like the end zone is the same as the other 100 yards of playing field?

If the offense advances the ball into the end zone, they get 6 points.
If the offense advances the ball to the 1-inch line, they get nothing.
The end zone is different than the other 100 yards.

The rule is in place to keep ball carriers from "fumbling forward" on purpose. Think about it this way, a running back breaks free, and is chased down by a defensive back, who slows the RB down. The RB, sensing an end to his forward progress is eminent, skips the ball forward, out the back of the endzone. That is why its defense's ball in that situation.

Correct. It stops the offense from fumbling forward to a teammate who is in the endzone for a touchdown.

For the same reason its a safety if the offense loses the ball through the back of their own end zone.

The whole point of the offense is to have possession of the the ball in the opposite teams end zone. The whole point of the defense is to defend your endzone.

If either team loses a ball they had possession of through the end zone you have failed and its a turnover.

Personally I think it should be a safety when the offense loses the ball through the end zone just like if they lost it or got tackled in their own end zone.

returning it the spot of the fumble would be the 1-inch line, which is no penalty at all

How do you rule this?

Happened Saturday in the Utah game. Utah WR hauled in an 80 yard pass, dropped the ball strolling in at the 1 foot line and DB picked up the ball and ran it back 99 2/3 yards for a TD the other way.

I think it's a great rule, personally. Doesn't happen very often but it makes things interesting when it does.
