Dayton Moore Appreciation Thread
We tend to run GMs, Coaches, and Mangers out pretty quickly. Let's take a look at what Dayton has done here. 2012 was especially good. What is your favorite Dayton move?
Salvador Perez: On February 27, 2012, Pérez signed a five-year, $7 million extension that includes three club options. He is under team control through 2019. He could earn up to $26.75 million if he reaches all of his incentives and all of his options are picked up. The extension covers his pre-arbitration seasons, two of his three arbitration eligible years, and, if all of his options are picked up, his final arbitration year and his first two years of free agency.[2] Pérez will earn $.75 million in 2012, $1 million in 2013, $1.5 million in 2014, $1.75 million in 2015 and $2 million in 2016. His options are $3.75 million in 2017, $5 million in 2018 and $6 million in 2019. Big Game: On December 9, 2012, Shields was traded to the Kansas City Royals (along with Wade Davis) in exchange for Wil Myers, Jake Odorizzi, Mike Montgomery and Patrick Leonard.[16] In his first year as a Royal, Shields posted a 13-9 record with a 3.15 ERA, also setting a personal best in games started. On October 31, 2013 the Kansas City Royals exercised a $13.5 million option on Shields for the 2014 season. Hosmer: Drafted in 2008. In the 2014 postseason, Hosmer helped lead the Royals to a record-setting run, winning three consecutive extra-inning games. After getting on base five times in the wildcard game against the Oakland A's, Hosmer also slammed a game-winning, two-run homer in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. In doing so, the first baseman became the first player in MLB history to hit both a triple and a home run during extra innings in one year's postseason. Need help nowish?: innegan was considered a top prospect for the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft.[7] The Kansas City Royals selected Finnegan in the first round, 17th overall, of the draft.[8] He signed on June 28.[9] Finnegan was called up to the majors for the first time on September 1, 2014 becoming the first player from the 2014 Draft to be promoted to the majors |

Really just built a team that fits Kauffman Stadium. Sort of like the teams in the 70s and 80s were. Pitching and defense will always win you a bunch of games.

Plus, I also noticed that HR's has dropped significantly, league-wise, at least I thought it seems like. So instead of investing on trying to get hitters who can hit HR's, the Royals seems to be getting hitters who can hit on contact, which apparently the Royals are 4th overall in that category, and some cheap pitching with a lethal bullpen.

The "speedy OF" bit is a bit hollow when our road record was superior to our home record. That doesn't align with the results of our 70s\80s teams

Lorenzo Cain's robbing the homerun in the ALDS. Nori's lucky-stabbing the ball while on the wall. The back to back catches by Cain in game 3. Opponents are no longer challenging Alex Gordon's arm strength. Gordon's not fast, but he's athletic as hell, and has a cannon of a arm. Even the stats love Dyson's defense, and he has improved tremendously in CF since the beginning of the season. Dyson throwing out that LAA player (can't recall who, on the top of my head) at 3rd base. Wasn't a perfect throw by any means, but good enough to get the guy out.

Belief in yourself is a huge stage, actually backing it is even better. Doing that on the most important stage is what can separate you from the average player. Good on all of them. |

I would say our pitchers having less ERs during away games and our hitters being the number 2 team with batting average on away games compared to 23rd at home has more to do with it.

Can we take a moment to reflect on what this man has done to build a championship contender on pitching acquisitions alone? I mean, when GMDM traded Jonathan Sanchez for Jeremy Guthrie did you ever think in a million years JGuts would start a world series game? Weren't you just a little worried when we bid Santana farewell and started the season with Jason Vargas? Dayton's farm produced two quality starters in Duffy and Ventura. The Shields trade worked and he drafted a phenom in BFinny. Dayton is either lucky or good and I'm leaning toward the latter.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here, but there were only seven pitchers in baseball with a worse xFIP than Jeremy Guthrie this year. He's just plainly not a good pitcher. You can give him some credit for the guy being able to chew innings, but that's really all he does.
Shit happens in the playoffs though (Jeff Suppan, Ryan Vogelsong).

He was decent. Jeff Suppan was once NLCS MVP. Sometimes the other guys just need to miss pitches.

Guthrie is the team's 5th starter for crying out loud.
