Nolan's Batman 3 Title

Batman sequel 'Rises' again

LOS ANGELES - THE next Batman sequel has a title: The Dark Knight Rises. Distributor Warner Bros. confirmed the name for director Christopher Nolan's third adventure about the DC Comics vigilante hero, which follows Batman Begins in 2005 and The Dark Knight in 2008.

The Dark Knight Rises is due in theaters July 20, 2012. Bucking Hollywood's current wave of 3-D movies, Nolan is not planning to shoot the film in 3-D.

Warner Bros had agreed with Nolan's argument that the sequel should resist the 3-D craze, the director told the Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex blog, which first reported the title.

Nolan would not reveal what villain might appear in The Dark Knight Rises, but he said it would not be the Riddler, one of the key bad guys in the comics and past film and TV Batman tales.

Earlier this year, Nolan said he would not resurrect the Joker, the cackling villain played by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. Ledger won the supporting-actor Academy Award for the role, a year after he died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. -- AP

Obviously I disagree. I thought Pfeiffer was great as Catwoman, and I loved Devito's Penguin. Great chemistry between Keaton and Pfeiffer. And Walken pushing bitches out of windows! It was awesome.

Sure, the penguins with rockets bit at the end was silly. So what? Fun movie.

I'm sorry I haven't been assimilated into the Nolanite Collective.

Agree about Batman Forever. Barely, barely watchable, once. And the Clooney Batman was a crime against humanity.

Well, you can count me in as one of the Nolan fanboys, but I can at least stake my claim as one of the originals, starting with Following and Memento.

I didn't realize until I rewatched it that he also directed Insomnia, which I really enjoyed.

I have liked his movies. It's not like I hated Dark Knight - I just think it's horribly overrated. It also seems like Nolan is on an endless mission to continually one-up himself in the flashy/shiny/convoluted department, and frankly it's getting really annoying. If he keeps it up eventually his movies will be like watching a CGI strobelight.

IM not sure where your getting this? I wasnt as enanmored with Inception as alot of people, but Nolan is one of the smartest mainstream filmakers out there today.

It isnt just dumb CGI with no story like most summer blockbusters. At least hes reaching for the fences.

The funny part is that Nolan hates CG stuff and stays away from it like the plague.

Yeah, I'm not sure how one would quantify it, but I'm pretty sure Nolan uses CGI less than just about any other mainstream director out there. Obviously, Inception is the biggest exception. He needed the technology to make that one work.

But even the hotel fight scene, where guys are fighting on the walls and the ceiling is mostly real. There's little to no CGI in that scene. Which is so impressive it makes my head hurt. Same with the stuff in the van.

Thinking TDK is over-hyped is one thing. Not appreciating Nolan as a director is completely different and much harder to understand, I think.

Michele Pfeiffer is my favorite Catwoman (didn't see the Halle one). I've been a big fan of Michele's since Into The Night came out (love that movie).

I'm going to preface this by saying that I am not a big Batman fan. I was into Marvel comics when I was a kid and really only liked the Flash when it came to DC superheroes. When it comes to the Batman movies, I prefer the Burton flicks too. I've seen them multiple times and own both.

BB and TDK didn't do that much for me. They were definitely slicker productions with much better effects but I came out of them - "meh". I will say that I didn't see either until they came out on DVD, so maybe the expectations were too high from all of the hype (especially with TDK).

I am not a connoisseur or film snob; I simply know if I enjoyed something or not and I enjoyed the Burton Batman more. I am definitely not saying the Nolan films are bad (I own both and will watch them again before the third comes out) but if I had to choose, I would take the Burton films.

Nothing at all wrong with this. It's all subjective. I haven't watched the Burton Batman/Returns films since Batman Begins came out.

I should revisit them and see how they hold up for me. I just feel like Nolan really tapped into something with his take on the character/world.

Again, it's all subjective.

I think this is where being a fan makes a big difference. I knew Batman from the campier early comics and the 60's TV series. Nolan went after the darker post-Frank Miller Batman that the younger fans knew, which happened after my comic buying days were done.

Absolutely. Makes total sense. The darker Batman is what I grew up with. And I remember the Knight Fall series (with Bane) when it came out. I bought ever issue the day it dropped. It's one of my favorite story lines in comic history.

I'm sure that's a huge part of why I'm so looking forward to this film.

BB is by far the best Batman film in my book. TDK is great but I think BB edges it out for me just because of the surprise factor.

As far as personal favorites go, I'll always like Burton's Batman the most. It's not the best movie of the three granted, but it is still my favorite. Plus, I will always prefer Jack's Joker.

In terms of the films the scripts for Burton's films were just awful but the bad ass gothic sets really made up for it. They had an atmosphere that Nolan didn't attempt to duplicate.

The Batman returns script is just atrocious.

I'm not a Nolan fanboy either. I'm a batman fanboy, and Nolan's films actually use stories (year 1, killing joke) that are just part of Batman lore.
