Pokemon Go: Augmented Reality (AR) Game For Your Smart Phone

To Be The Very Best: Pokémon Enters Into Augmented Reality

Gabriel Rosenberg

Halfway through your walk to school, a wild Charmander appears. Just a few throws of a Pokéball, and it could be yours. Will you stop to catch it? Nintendo is betting you will. Not just that, they're betting that you've waited most of your life to see a Pokémon in the real world. Pokémon Go — the upcoming iOS and Android app from Nintendo, The Pokémon Co., and developer Niantic Labs — promises to let anyone with a smart phone "find" and train the diverse creatures of Pokémon all around them. For aspiring Trainers, it could be an entirely new way to interact with a now 20-year-old franchise. For these companies, though, Pokémon Go — which launches for free sometime in July — offers the biggest opportunity yet to bring augmented reality into the mainstream, a chance to prove not only that AR technology is ready for people, but that people are ready for AR.

I thought it was an interesting idea, AR rather than VR. I've seen lots of apps that kind of do this already-mostly playing with pictures to add makeup or special effects. I'm not fond of the Pokemon craze but a Google Maps type of integration and ( I assume) a way of monetizing the app by opening it up to sponsored locations sounds intriguing.

We have businesses downtown that are offering specials and charging stations.

I think it's pretty cool that groups of people are getting out at night to have some peaceful, playful fun. There are groups of kids (in their 20's-kids to me) that get together after work and walk around doing this. It reminds me of those "take back the night" community events designed to get decent people outside in the evening to push back on the scumbag criminals. The game is goofy as hell but I think it's a positive thing.

It's fun. I was never into the video game or card collecting, so it's pretty new to me. I've been playing a week and am just on level 5. Who knew having a baby would be so time consuming? Lol

I did save my son from a Pidgey.

My kids were into it. So we've had Pokecrap around the house forever. I found a Pikachu keychain in the original package in my basement months ago that has got to be at least a decade old. Probably supposed to be a stocking stuffer. The only time I ever joined in was to play Pokemon Snap on the N64. I started trying to help my younger ones get good pictures and ended up actually playing it. I'm more interested in the AR concept itself as opposed to VR. There have been plenty of apps that layer stuff on top of pictures. Like make up apps or SnapChat. This is a bit different and if it is taking off it seems like it can only make AR better in the long run.

My younger daughter's fiance was talking about Pokemon Snap last night. He was saying it would be cool if they brought it back for something like a tablet, and your view would reflect the motion of the device. Like if it was a window (or the viewfinder of the camera) that you could look through to see the game world. Sounded like an interesting idea.

That said, the game even warns you to be aware of your surroundings. No one has the right to trespass.

This game is so freaking fun and genius. This is more successful than the NFL's Play 60 BS campaign. This is getting children out and about and out of dark rooms playing video games and being internet tough guys on social media. Brilliant. Maybe this new generation has a chance to not be so socially awkward and learn how to talk like literate people.

Yes, it's getting kids and people out of the house, but it's not exactly "exercise". The NFL's Play 60 is about playing, running, climbing, throwing... Not walking around pressing a button. I like the game, but be realistic.
