Taking a break from the NFL obsession

Those of you who know me and have visited the gameroom will know what kind of step this is for me so here's my checklist.

1.Recently informed my big money fantasy league that I'm out and I've already found someone to take my spot.

2.Will not be activating the other 6 DTV receivers this season.

3.Will not have Sunday Ticket

4,Will be spending more time outside in the Fall, either here or at the lake instead of being cooped up 12-14 hours on Sundays watching a game I have very little faith in anymore.

This does not mean I am done and have washed my hands of all but the plan is to take a major break which in all honesty I hope becomes a permanent thing.

Thanks for listening/reading.

Eh, not really.

Money has wrecked the NCAA, and created a real disadvantage if you're not Alabama.

The thing is, a team can have a successful season in college football without sniffing a national championship. For a team like mine (Iowa), winning 9 or 10 games and playing in a good bowl is nirvana. Once you get past the handful of powerhouse perennials, there's a ton of parity in that 2nd tier of power conference teams.

The NFL is completely "all or nothing" and despite all of the mechanisms in place to create parity, there really isn't any. It's just like college only on a much smaller scale with absolutely zero consolation for anyone other than the SB winner.

On the flip side, my dads passion for the Chiefs growing up in the 90's is what propelled me to become such a fan. It/football was something we bonded over moreso than any other thing in life, and that's still the truth to this day.

Remember my dad and I watching games as a kid as a highlight of my childhood memories.

Doesn't always have to be a bad thing man.

Being content with mediocrity doesn't mean the NCAA isn't severely flawed.

Good luck.

I have done similar during the Cassel and Smith years.
I recorded the games. If they loss I deleted, if they won I fast forwarded.

Some of you guys talk about this as if it's a disease or getting over a drug addiction. The fact is, football is the greatest sport of all time (in my opinion). What is so wrong with enjoying and obsessing over the game? Why do we encourage backing away from it? If football is what makes you happy and something that is a part of your life then why are there so many people in here talking about taking "That step" Or "Big step" as if it's something that's wrong and that he needs to step away from.

Seriously asking because I don't understand. Not attacking.

This. FB season is the best sports season. Love my Sunday's watching, listening, chatting. All day. I catch all three games and love highlights.

Perhaps some take it too seriously.

Same. It's 3-4 months out of the year, and once a week I spend an entire day geeking out and talking with friends about the games. I love it. Can't imagine wanting to step away from it.

To each their own of course, but the words of encouragement towards Nzoner has me so confused. It's like others feel the same way but can't bring themselves to do it themselves.

A lot of this thread reads like an alcohol/drug addiction thread.

Good for you. There was a time I could tell you ever player on every roster and every coach and assistant coach on every team. It got to a point that it was so much of the entertainment in my life that I was missing out on so much. I have been watching just the Chiefs every week for over 8 years now. As the time has passed I have found more time to do other things that I enjoy very much. Ironically the game has gotten worse with each passing year.
Best of luck in all your new adventures!

It's hard not to relate to him after watching countless ass-****ings that are brushed away like they never happened.

Eventually you will figure out that time spent with family is a thousand times more fulfilling than watching yet another ass-****ing, whether it's produced by the officials, NFL, or even our own inept franchise.

Oh I can understand being discouraged after those types of things for sure.

It's not even his thing that I'm confused by now, it's just the reactions. I mean look at the response above yours. I don't understand the supportive nature that's being presented. I personally want everyone to be happy with whatever they choose in life, but to me, it sounds like Nzoner has spent a rather large portion of his life loving football. And not just the Chiefs. Football. What is so wrong with that that we need to send over our encouragement for the fact he's trying to step away from football?

I guess that's my difference.

Football time IS my family time. It's what's always brought us together. Same with my friends. All of my friends I have are because of our connection with football. We talk about it all the time, and therefore have grown to know eachother in other ways during the off season. Football is my damn life. Whether the NFL is rigged or not is another story.

Do you have young children or are they grown up? That makes a big difference.

I have young children that don't care right now, so that it swaying my opinion. When they get older and start watching my opinion will change.
