Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Oh and about that NO game people keep referencing to justify Alex Smith in any capacity. In statistics you have outliers, which are stats that are in the extremes. And by convention you omit those outliers or else your stats are skewed and unreliable and therefore unusable. So in all honesty, take out Alex Smith's best game (against NO) and his worst game (whenever that was in his career) and you have stats worse than Matt Cassel. Justify him now wankers.

Now, does that mean it's ALWAYS the case? No, of course not...but far more first round OTs come in and play well right away than almost any other position.

The whole ****ing point is that we should want a major upgrade at a position with the top pick and the best we can probably hope for is how Albert played last year...it's a lateral move that saves cash and pays a second round dividend. Nothing more.
It sounds to me like you're saying that LT is a safe pick.

Absolutely, because even if a LT "busts" he can have an eight-year career.

I've said at least 10 times that Joeckel is underrated on here and is a good football player that I'd love to have if Albert wasn't already a Chief.

You guys make my head spin. If someone dares to say that a LT is a safer pick than a QB, it's dismissed with claims that LTs bust just as often as QBs do. But now, apparently LTs are safe because they generally come ready to step up to NFL competition right out of the box and if they fail, they're still useful OL pieces anyway. FWIW, I'm in the latter camp.

There's also the matter of comparing what QB A did against Defense B compared to what the average QB did against Defense B.

Alex Smith's game against New Orleans was very AVERAGE compared to other games turned in by QBs against New Orleans that season.

It's all pretty simple. You hit and find an elite QB and you are a yearly Super Bowl conter. Hit on an elite tackle and you may marginally improve your team as a whole. Your average to poor QB is going to still miss those windows given and hold the ball too long negating the benefit given.

To put it simply... Joe Thomas and Jamarcus Russel were drafted in the same year.

The Raiders have a better record than the Browns since that point. That's the impact even the best LT in the league has on a team. Even if you draft the worst QB in NFL history, you're still on par with a team that drafts that great LT.

Yeah, there's no way that a doctor could perform a physical next Friday before the draft starts at 6:30 EST.
Damn Dane, you just don't get it, do you? If the Chiefs trade before the draft, they traded too early and they didn't get enough value; if the Chiefs trade on Friday, they waited too long and lost leverage and didn't get enough value. If the Chiefs don't trade, the Chiefs wasted a draft pick and still have two left tackles on the team so they lost value on both their draft pick and Albert's future tradability.

Get with the program. No matter what the Chiefs do it is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Alex Smith is Matt Cassel. The Chiefs will never be better than 8-8. Why? Because we didn't draft Geno Smith.

Now go listen to Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin and start bonin' down in the back seat of an old camaro.
