The SNL Thread

I've been considering doing this for a while, so here goes. A thread to discuss anyone & anything relating to the show.

They keep a pretty tight lid on all images & apparently stay after youtube as well, so those kinds of things might be a 'lil hard to come by, but oh well.

Pretty much everyone here seems to be a fan of it on some level, so it might be kinda fun.

Its as close to Cant Miss Television as there is for me.

I very vaguely remember that, cant wait... the show was sooo good back then, these days its so hit and miss.

Seriously dont think its because, as some people have told me, that I'm too old and my humor is dated, either... I'm on the intrawebs constantly, I know whats hip these days, swear on my grandpa I'm the youngest 44 year old since forever... fact is the show just isnt that good right now.

You've got Killam, Thompson, and to a lesser extent, Pharoah and McKinnon... Kyle Mooney has potential as well, but its a far cry from the 90's IMO.

I think they have a good performing class, but their writing has dropped off a bit after Seth and Tina. What's more fascinating is the talent they've burned through to get here. Leaving behind those who've moved on of their own volition, Jenny Slate, Michaela Watkins and Casey Wilson are amazing talents to just walk away from.

Maybe it was their writing skills. I saw James Franco's behind the scenes doc and Casey in particular seemed daunted by the pitch process.

Interesting bit of inside pool, it appears that one of the most prolific writers of recent was back when JB Smoove was on staff. Someone was talking about him and instead of one or two ideas, he'd have pages and pages of bit ideas that the writers room loved. Like, new stuff each week. Talked like listening to JB pitch was the funnest part of their week. I could picture it and would love to have seen some of them.

How they go about the writing/casting process is probably the single most talked about and interesting thing about the show... I've certainly always wondered how that all plays out, how much is writers and how much is the talent pitching ideas etc

JB Smoove... know exactly who he is, but until now didnt know he'd been a popular writer there, interdasting.

Seems like from, say, the 90's back that the performers had a LOT more say in the writing process and now it "seems" to be all about the writers... all I can honestly say is that it just doesnt tickle my funny bone like it used to, its much more hit and miss.

Taran and McKinnon alone are good enough to keep me coming back.

I'm really glad that we're in the McKinnon era instead of the Wiig era. I like Wiig as an actress, but when she writes herself characters it's more about performing difficult things [talking fast, being whiny, that God awful thing with Armisen making up songs on the spot] than being funny.

Killams take on Christpher Waltz and Pitt are consistently spot on, he's a rare bright spot.

Wiig... I never fully understood why Lorne put her to the front of the line so often, myself. In an interesting twist though, her and Armisen were so far bad that it seemed to come full circle back around to good... I liked those skits in spite of myself.

So bad they couldnt be ignored.

I think she does very well what improv performers respect.

She's obviously quick-witted and versatile. I just find her more irritating than funny BECAUSE I know what she's going for.

You've seen it. 'Audience, give me a place, give me an occupation, give me a reason to argue. . . . AND GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!'

Tonight is no exception... Jim Carrey and Soundgarden from 1996, its almost a guaranteed winner, from the days when every single episode was a winner.

I'll probably be in bed by the time the JK Simmons rerun airs at 10:30, but you can bet I'll be up for this rerun... just a friendly heads up.

That whole thing was great, wasnt it?... man, the new show doesnt have even one recurring sketch that approaches The Joe Pesci Show.

Not one I can think of, those older shows and casts were just much better.

Lorne should BEG writers like Jim Downey and Adam McKay to come back, and while he's at it why not call up some of the old alum that arent doing much these days like Jim Bruer, Tim Meadows etc?

Norm will be a judge on Last Comic Standing. That's really exciting. It's hard to understand why he and Roseanne have constantly been black-balled, but he and her together is pretty cool (especially since they have such mutual respect for each other). Anthony Jeselnik to host. Finally, some edge to this stale show.

I was only able to hold out until 11:00, but it was worth it to see the wrestling promo and Bambi... those two skits are easily top ten of the year, they had me laughing out loud like SNL used to.
