Marty Schottenheimer ill?
Did anyone else catch Tim Grunhard on Petro's show the other day? Marty came up in a discussion about the temperaments of the 1990s Chiefs teams Grunny played on, and he mentioned almost in passing that "Marty isn't doing too well these days." He said something like, "I don't know if it's dementia or what you call it ..." And Petro indicated that he was aware of it as well. And that was it.

I don't remember hearing or reading that before. Is that common knowledge that I just missed? Anyone else have any info?

About five years ago, Schottenheimer, 73, was diagnosed with Early-onset Alzheimer’s, a form of the brain disease that affects some 5 million people in the United States and is the sixth-leading cause of death in America.

On Friday, Schottenheimer and Pat, his wife of 48 years, will attend Byner’s reunion with about 25 players and coaches from the last Browns team to win 12 regular-season games and come within five minutes of reaching the Super bowl.

“He’s in the best of health, [but] sometimes he just doesn’t remember everything,” Pat said. “He functions extremely well, plays golf several times a week. He’s got that memory lag where he’ll ask you the same question three or four times.

“He remembers people and faces, and he pulls out strange things that I’ve never heard, but he’s doing well. It’s going be a long road. We both know that.”

I hope this is not true. Marty caused us a lot of heartache, but he's a good guy. And I think of all his teams, he liked his Chiefs teams the best.

I heard that as well and was sad to hear it. I am always up for an old tape of a Marty speech. They were tremendous.

Nah, he had run his course here. What kman34 said below -- I think the team had tuned him out (and so had fans). The playoff disappointments had become too great, and the Monday Night Meltdown pretty much showed the Marty Era was over.

I loved what Marty brought to this franchise initially. He (and Carl) were exactly what it needed. I've always been highly critical of his playoff performances, but I wish no ill will on the man.
