I thought this was what really turned the game. Contest the inside pass and collapse on their big guy to force a turnover.

Purdue started having so many turnovers they quit going inside so much.

Kansas fans should, considering Purdue's quick tempo throughout the game led to a ton of easy baskets for Kansas. If you're going to beat this KU team, it's not going to be like that. They are way too good in transition.

Slowing down the game is really just hoping you will catch some luck and will catch a lull in their efficiency and if you do, then you slow the game down it lessens the probability that they will get back to their mean efficiency.

Some teams will say, "We need to slow it down." When they really mean, "We need to hit, hold, push, whatever them hard enough it takes them out of their game"

Both the luck and "physical" approach leads to shitterrible basketball.
The more possessions there are, the more likely it also is that the superior team will exhibit their superiority. If the 2010 Kansas/Northern Iowa game was played with 70 possessions instead of Northern Iowa slowing it down to a snail's pace (61), for example, there's almost no way that upset happens and Self could quite possibly have another national championship. This is another reason why I much prefer facing teams in the tournament with quick tempos.

Right, but at it's core, NIU was trying to catch a lull in KUs efficiency. And also hit them hard enough to take them out of their game, but at it's core, slowing it down is just hoping the other team misses some shots and comes off the mean efficiency and doesn't have time to recover and return to the mean.

Myth, and disproven by a Harvard study:

On the surface, this logic makes sense; allowing the superior team fewer opportunities to score seems like a good, if risky, strategy. Luckily, we can empirically test this theory.

Using tempo data from Ken Pomeroy’s incredible website, we have analyzed every first and second round NCAA tournament game that could produce an upset from 2004 to 2009. We made the decision to exclude 1 vs 16 and 2 vs 15 matchups, since over the last decade those games have produced no upsets. That left us with a sample of 144 games to analyze.

The results were, well, stunning. There were 35 upsets in the data set, and the average tempo of those games was 67.77, while the average tempo of the games in which the underdog lost was only 64.93. Using the statistical technique of a two-sample t test, we can find that we reject the null hypothesis that there was no difference between the tempos of successful and unsuccessful underdogs, and conclude that successful NCAA tournament underdogs played at a faster tempo, using more possessions. The P-value for this test stat was 0.0134, which is well inside the threshold for significance.

That's nice, but it hardly addresses what I posted at all. Once again, the more possessions of basketball you play, the more likely it is that the better team will win in the end. This is undeniable. Just think about how many more upsets there would be if games were only 30+ possessions rather than 60+.

I do, however, enjoy the irony in you citing a blog post that sought to test Dean Oliver's hypothesis about underdogs slowing the game down (the same Dean Oliver who you improperly cited earlier today to claim that tempo didn't matter).

It directly addresses your point, and directly refutes it.

Metrics show, to give yourself a better than 50% chance of beating KU, you have to keep the score under 72 just for starters.

Purdue stopped going inside to Ivan Drago and it cost them the game.
Ku also started collapsing and sagging in on them feeding the entry pass to their bigs.

When Purdue tried to play both bigs against KU, KU ran on them and pushed it in transition that Self forced Painter to abandon it.

I read all of it and I'm afraid it doesn't. Was a nice try, though (even if it did expose your previous post about Dean Oliver for the nonsense it was).
