Sure seemed like he worked 90-92 the last couple years but he was in the 87-88 range today. His velocity looked shot. Maybe he can reshape himself into a groundball pitcher throwing everything down and getting his changeup to 70mph. I don't know. As he is right now, he a real POS on the mound.

I'll just say that I will be more interested in Young's next start than I normally would be. Don't want to overreact to a few starts, but we're not playing for next year. We gotta have our best 5.

Back end of the Yankees bullpen almost gave up a run tonight in another 4 hour game with the Red Sox. Andrew Miller loaded the bases but got out of it.
Miller and Betances have pitched 28 IP with 0 ER and 48 K. It's gonna be a fun battle when we play them. |

What annoyed me about Yost was he stood up for his player....by throwing Finnegan under the bus. Lame. Yost might not think there's a problem with Guthrie but I'd bet anything DM and his assistants in the front office do

I'm sure the front office is all over it. Still, it's only 5 starts. It's a relatively small sample size.
Vargas has only had 4 starts, that's not much either. One of the two needs to figure it out though. I've always been a big fan of Young, I think he can fill one of the spots just fine. But there's no guarantee we'll be able to fill the other spot until after the All Star Break, if we're lucky. Guthrie has been a 200 IP guy for us the last two years, and that doesn't include Shields 225 IP. That's a ton of work to replace. |

This is no longer about feeling good, and letting a guy try and work it out because it doesn't matter anyway. This is about winning the Division and getting to the Playoffs. We can't sit idly by while Guts has one good outing out of 10. That ain't going to get it done in the Central

You could get all sorts of guys to do that. Now Guts pitched great down the stretch in Sept-oct so it's fair to think his good days aren't all that long ago (6months?). But at 36, pitchers are known to fall off the map |

Now, of course, Guthrie has not been league average or anything close to it. He's got to pick things up quickly or be at risk of getting Pipped by Chris Young, in my opinion. Guthrie is a good guy and well-respected in the clubhouse. They'll give him some rope. I hope it isn't too much. Speaking of that, yesterday is one of those classic "hindsight" games. In hindsight, you wish they'd pulled Guthrie before the inning he gave up the bomb to Cabrera. But I'm not going to complain about trying to get through a few more innings when already down 4-0 against a pitcher who has been perfect through 4 innings. Still like seeing the team battle back through the deficit to make that so close yesterday, though. Think about this: The Royals are 7 games over .500 and playing .640 baseball, and that's WITH the suspensions and having had Alex Rios miss 3 weeks already. That hardly seems real. Need to win this series against the Indians and get a little hot.

What's the word on Rios? Did he start rehabbing last week?
