Sandy Hook Demolition

So apparently the Sandy Hook task force recommended that they demolish the school and rebuild. I just don't see how that helps the kids involved and would be a huge waste of taxpayer money. What do you guys and gals think?

Poll forthcoming...

Yeah, except it's been 5 months, and the traumatic experience could be re-lived (albeit to a smaller degree) every time they are in that environment.

You are expecting a small community to foot the bill for an entire school due to an isolated tragedy because you don't want your taxes to increase slightly?

Really?

it seems unnecessary to me to demolish the building. Doesn't that cost a lot of money and shit that they don't have?

If you're asking if I want my tax dollars to be used for that, the answer is no, "really."

They should've torn down the Hyatt and rebuilt from scratch. That would make the death memories disappear.

For all of the stupid things your tax dollars get spent on, including greedy politicians, you're going to get up in arms about rebuilding an elementary school? Seems silly to me. Especially considering the amount you pay won't even change. Do you know what your tax dollars are being spent on right now?

Not trying to be a dick, but do you know exactly where your money is going?

That's kind of my point. I watched a big steak get cut out of my income at the beginning of 2013. When I see my taxes go up, I get more sensitive to what those assholes are doing with my money. Hey, if it were up to me, I would like to see everyone of those pricks run through a wood chipper and start over.

A new building does not mean those kids won't think about what happened anymore. You can't just erase memories like that by putting the kids in a different building. Especially when the small community can't afford to do so.

It's an isolated tragedy, like you said. And you can't expect taxpayers to foot the bill any more than you can expect the community to foot the bill. Because the reasoning for wanting the new school isn't really justified in either case.

I am not advocating "erasing the memory" with a new building. I assumed that was obvious.

But you can minimize the daily traumatic experience by altering the environment. As you know, environment is a huge factor in human emotional status. Alter it, minimize the effects. That is what I am advocating.

You can't expect to use taxpayer money for every tragedy, but this is a special case. I can expect taxpayers to foot the [minimal] bill because it is an isolated incident. That's my point.

As for it's justification, that's entirely subjective. I think it is justified due to the rarity and the magnitude of the situation.

That would work if children were only able to perceive colors while failing to perceive every other component of their environment.

Otherwise, it won't help.
