Talks with Eric Berry for extension 'ramping up'
Per Ian Rapoport. To the few out there who think we don't need this guy for a good price, happy to see that the front office is of course on the right side. |

Devin McCourty's deal averages $9m per year. He's only notched 4 INTs in the last three seasons combined and he's got nowhere near the non-coverage skills Berry has. If Harrison Smith and Kam Chancellor were up for new contracts right now they'd be talking about getting $9-10 per. It's just what elite safeties are going for these days.. |

A Franchise QB isn't good enough: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers - those are the guys that you and all the other people that constantly bitch about Alex Smith use as a comparison, which is pure nonsense but he's NOT, nor will he ever be, a Hall of Famer. But good enough to win a Super Bowl? Absolutely. Quote:

Do you think the Chiefs would have won 9 games with anyone other than Smith at QB, especially since Bowe, Fasano, Avery and at times, Kelce, completely disappeared, along with the offensive line? |

I believe that elite defensive tackles are more important to the scheme than an elite safety. |

That's fair enough. I was just trying to point out the flaw in assuming a player isn't contributing enough because he doesn't have high INT totals. Different position, but Sean Smith doesn't show up in box scores for shit. Dude can't catch a cold, but his contribution to this team is insane. |

I'm aware.
Did you feel like he was a difference maker that year? It was his second best season, yes. And an improvement over where he'd been without question. But was he a $10 million player that year? I certainly don't think so. He played a great game in the unholy Terrell Pryor massacre and apart from that he was just kinda there (and everyone played a great game in the unholy Terrell Pryor massacre). Besides, guys aren't above AP consideration because of name recognition either. This season was a cut above anything he'd done in the past and the first time he'd even gotten within sniffing distance of the rabbit he should be chasing - Earl Thomas.

Depends on what you consider a difference maker, I suppose. I remember him spending a ton of time in the box and basically neutralizing the other team's TEs all season long. Going off memory alone, I can only remember him giving up a TD or two (I think they were both to Julius Thomas). Also, IIRC, he had more sacks and hurries than any other safety that season. A lot of people would argue that a box safety could never be worth $10m per season though. |

Berry absolutely makes impact plays. Look at the SD game as one in particular.

It would have been nice had Dorsey locked him up for three years but as fans, we can't expect him to hit 100% of the time. |

He had one good year, and a big reason why is Poe. You want to give a one year wonder a contract that is roughly $10m a year over a safety that is the leader of your team and has been an elite player for years? |

Secondly, there are not "DT's all over the league" but if you're right (and I don't believe you are), he'll command closer to $6 million a year, not $10 million per year. Thirdly, the DT's you speak of in the draft have never stepped on an NFL field. Glenn Dorsey was supposed to be dominant. What happened to him? Ryan Sims? The list is endless, at every position, of guys that are "supposed" to be great in the NFL, yet it rarely shakes out that way. And lastly, for the third time, I believe that Poe & Howard are more important to this scheme than Berry. That doesn't mean that Berry "sucks", it means that at a time when the Chiefs are looking at a exodus of defensive starters facing free agency, Safety is the on the bottom rung of importance when compared to DT and CB. |

Poe shouldn't be a factor here. He's under contract through 2016, and the cap will continue to go up, so there's no reason the Chiefs can't re-sign Howard and Berry then address Poe next offseason.

The Chiefs have approximately $27 million in cap space, with Berry, Howard and Sean Smith "appearing" to need about $10 million per for just those players. Toss in Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson and Mike DeVito and you're looking at around $10 million among the three. The Chiefs also need to pursue offensive lineman and with Smith likely gone, a cornerback in the $6 million per range like Johnson or Lane. Dorsey has a lot of difficult decisions to make. |
