***The Official 2014 Gardening Thread***

So what is everyone planting this year? Trying anything new or different? I've already got potatoes in the ground and I'm trying an herb garden this year. I've started cilantro, oregano, and basil in planter pots from seed and will transfer to a 55 gallon drum cut in half length wise and laid on its side with drain holes.

Overall I'm going with tomatoes, green beans, peppers(jalapeņo/bell), broccoli, lettuce, and the aforementioned potatoes.

How about just regular mulch they sell in a bag here?

Not sure where you acquire a hay bale here and I surely don't want that shit blowing in my pool Buehler!
Not at all. Watching your seedling break through the top soil is a great joy. How many times do you visit them? Put a fan out there to move the plants for really strong stems.

Gardening is a great science. And relatively easy.

Yea it's pretty dang fun actually. And if shit dies, I'm only out a couple bucks for the transplants and a few cents for the seeds. It's cheap entertainment and allowed me to put something nice looking on that side of the pool fence. I like to go out there everyday and see what's changed. I have a little lizard that I find in the garden bed who runs up the wall when I come around. I assume he's just eating the bugs? Nothing looks chewed.

And since my wife doesn't eat vegetables anyway, if shit dies, no one gets upset about it.

The fan idea pretty unique. Hadn't heard of that.

Newbies usually kill plant due to over watering. Let that soil get dry up to one inch down. Let those roots stretch out and go deep.

That's why tree's blow over so easy here. Their roots don't get, well, rooted enough as the water never goes deep.

Don't forget to change your nute %ages when you go to flower/fruit.

This is going to sound like a dumb as hell question for a gardening thread but figured I'd get a honest answer at least. Google hasn't lead me to much of an answer so here it goes. I recently bought a house with no sprinkler system and will be adding one soon enough. Any need to water dormant grass even occasionally in the winter (if you'd even call it that in TX this year)?

You don't need to water it. As long as the roots live, the grass will return.

It'd be better if you could find a hay or grass type mulch. Wood won't seal the ground or hold out the heat nearly as well. If you're going to drop coin, go buy cotton seed hulls. Those are the best mulch anyway.

Lizard bud is your friend. Rabbits need to ****ing die. If there are raccoons around trap them and dead them. Neighborhood cats dig in gardens a lot. Dead them if you want too. I won't tell anybody. Just keep them bitches out. Bugs are a big problem when the plants put on fruit here.

If it's dry as **** water it before it comes out of dormancy. Otherwise no.

LOL @ you mother****ers for needing a fan. The wind blows every damned day here.

This man speaks the truth about letting it root. If you water that bitch all the time you will never keep up when it reaches peak water use at reproduction.

Isn't that why corn does well out there? Seems like corn needs the wind to help with strong stem development. And ear of corn is pretty heavy.

Lol. I'm 30 inches of precip away from corn doing "well". And no. Generally wind adds stress or damage to the plant.

Ha. That's the trade-off for pot, so I've heard. Stress lowers the yield.

30 inches? With all the snow? Damn. My ex inlaws had a huge farm in Iowa. Like 2K acres. Always stressed.

We get 16 in of precip a year. I believe most of Iowa is in the 40 range. Stress always damages yield. But you are spot on. About needing it to root

Yeah. It's a tough out. Especially if they have a bunch of cash leases. Prices are in the shiiiiiiiiiiiter. I am looking forward to the crop year though. Hopefully they are too.

Thanks. Figured I was ok until it comes out of dormancy but good to confirm. Its a kinda shitty lawn because of tons of old shade trees and grass hasn't been replanted in really forever.

Figure I'm likely to hit this group up for some more questions. Want some fresh basil will prob be my first step if my shade trees allow it.
