Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Albert's never been a malcontent. He put up with Haley damn near destroying him and the annual 'move Albert to guard' crap. He's shown up on sports radio several times and has always seemed like a gracious 'good soldier' type.

*****'s comments during the draft brought this all into focus - ***** offered him a great deal, his agent !@#$ed up and advised him to turn it down, now the agent is desperately trying to save face by tying this whole thing up.

This is where the fact that agents have only limited fiduciary responsibilities can really screw the athletes. His agent mis-read the market in 2011 and now he's putting his interests ahead of his clients and forcing him into a really lousy situation.
I can buy this. Makes tons of sense, and I never really thought of Albert as ever being a problem for this team.

He only did so on twitter after he was asked about it on 610. The first time he mentioned refusing to switch was in that interview.

And plus when has a successful player ever been happy about switching positions? The players who get asked to switch position are roster bubble guys. He has to be pissed about being asked.

He was offered a deal by Pioli which he refused. And he and the Dolphins had agreed to terms but it was Dorsey who asked for too much in the trade.

Were the terms of the potential deal ever found out?

I have no idea how people can be upset at him for that.

This is the guys livelihood and he's excelled at the most prestigous position on the line. You expect him to be happy about the possibility of switching to a lesser position coming on the biggest contract of his life? Especially when it's in no way based on merit or performance?

It's a demotion - period. And it's not a demotion based on merit. If you, me or anyone we knew had to take the same hit, damn right we'd be pissed about it. Ultimately we'd all probably do it (as would Albert), but he still has every right to be upset.

He's human. He's busted his ass and kept his mouth shut through the last 4 years of obscene idiocy. His reward would be a demotion after proving to be among the better guys in the league at his job.

There is no way anyone can reasonably hold that against him.

I've been saying the same thing, but people are too busy painting BA as the bad guy in all of this.

Yep. They always focus on the fact that he's making 9.6 mil as if that makes him less human and he should be happy with taking a demotion. It's hilarious.

Players change agents all the time. Blaming his agent is convenient and makes people feel better about the player they have supported for years. I'm willing to bet Albert's agent has a better idea of Albert's value than Albert does.

Pioli offered him a deal that exceeded what he is currently being offered.

TBG (I'm pretty sure it was him) said that Dorsey offered Albert a deal and that Albert turned it down because he thought he could get a lot more.

It's reported today that Miami would still be interested in trading for Albert IF HE LOWERS HIS DEMANDS.

I think Dorsey and Reid are being completely fair with Branden....they made him an offer, he refused and asked to be traded where he could get the money he wants and Dorsey made it clear that they would trade BA for a second round pick.

It's hard to tell if Miami actually agreed to a contract with Branden, because there are conflicting reports, I don't think they ever did.

At least using occams razor, it seems there was never a contract agreement with Miami and Albert.

What hook? That you want a player to disrupt a lockerroom of the team you follow just because?

Yeah, good logic and rationale.
