*** Official 2017 Royals Offseason Repository ***

The reign is over. Time to begin the quest for the next one.

Interesting offseason opens for the Royals. Will they go all in for one last shot with this crew? Will they re-tool for 2018 and beyond? Will Dayton Moore actually decrease payroll this time?

Trades, free agent signings, rumors, plans, proposals... dump 'em all here, for this is... the offseason repository!

Royals Top Prospects, 2017

This is a list that’s going to seem a little bleak initially, as Raul Mondesi got enough ABs to age out of the prospect rankings (just barely – at 135 ABs, he is not rookie eligible). But that said, I like the talent and feel like this is a system that will actually be underrated by the prospect services.

Spoiler!

I guess we are sort of forgetting about Mike Minor as well.

Yeah, he's under contract this year for $4MM with a mutual option for $10MM in '18, or a $1.25MM buyout.

I'm not super optimistic about him being able to "effectively" crack the rotation this season with his shoulder issue.

Am I the only one that thinks the future looks pretty bleak? I don't have the highest opinion of Dayton Moore and his abilities in the draft, and our minor league system looks pretty barren. Is there any hope?

I had a scary feeling about the upcoming season before the horrible news this weekend.

I hope I'm wrong.

The glass is half-empty: pitching regresses further, and we cant hold a lead....continue to strikeout at a higher rate, and nobody hits HRs now that Morales is gone.

The glass is half-full: team rallies behind Ace's tragedy, and several guys are in contract years, looking for big bucks....and that translates to one last run.

I just think our window may be shutting.....and if we fall in a hole early, our team may get gutted come trade deadline.

I'm mentally preparing myself for the worst.

The Royals have definitely not hit at a high percentage in the draft, and they have especially struggled since MLB closed the loophole KC had been using to stockpile talent late.

The minor league system doesn't jump at you but does have a lot of "IF" guys who could see their stock explode with a strong year.

There's always hope. It doesn't take THAT much to look at the core under control and see a group that can be the center of a good team... Perez, Gordon, Soler as position players (and if they can find a way to keep Moustakas, that's almost half your lineup). Duffy under control to headline the rotation, with a solid mid-rotation guy in Kennedy and the potential of Karns.

Season hasn't started yet. Add Pedro Alvarez and Luke Hochevar to this yeam, and it improves the outlook quite a bit.

Throw in a Hammel or Colby Lewis or another arm to add to the rotation, and that improves a shade more.

It would be the AL. Some guys just aren't built for the AL, they need that 're-set' at the back of the order. They need a chance to take a breath, get an easy out, and regroup for the top of the order.

Hammel looks to be one of those guys. You're probably looking at a guy that will struggle to keep his ERA in the 4.5 range, though Kaufmann might help him a bit there.

It's a risk reward thing. Anderson's a far FAR riskier proposition (in fact, I'd say you're all but hitting on 20 with him), but a healthy Brett Anderson can be a solid #3 starter on a contender. Hammel, OTOH, is more likely to give you 180 innings but almost certainly going to do so from the 4 or 5 spot in your rotation.

Why not grab Nate Eovaldi and see if Eiland can get some movement on that fastball? Colby Lewis has shown he can pitch well in tough hitting environments and in the AL; he's a happy medium between the high injury risk of Anderson and the proven production of Hammel.

Doug Fister can't throw a ball past anyone but the Royals, even without Dyson, will likely still have a solid defensive team. Then again, his ceiling might be Hammel's floor.

I'd say Lewis - Eovaldi - Hammel - Anderson in that order, with some combination of guys like Fister, CJ Wilson, Henderson Alvarez and Ross Detwieler as emergency options (especially if you can get one on a NRI with the belief that they could re-establish their value).
Colby Lewis is someone who I hadn't really thought about, but he makes sense. Henderson Alvarez is someone I've talked about in the past, too.

Believe Eovaldi is going to miss most, if not all, of 2017 after having surgery in August or September. He could be a bargain for someone, but not for KC.

Perhaps not something that could even be rationally considered, but how about Lynn/Garcia/Adams for Moustakas?

Lynn's a workhorse starter coming off injury. Obviously TJ isn't anything to just take for granted, but it's not appreciably more likely than an ACL surgery to linger. Both Lynn and Moustakas are pending FAs and would yield draft pick compensation if they walked (presuming the deal is made now). Lynn may be slightly less likely to hit that $50 million mark but if he has a solid second half, he'll get there, IMO. He's not a big time breaking ball pitcher so he'll find his form sooner than most and since he had his TJ surgery in spring last season, I would expect he'll be at full roar by May at the worst.

Adams has been discussed.

Greg Garcia is a guy that gets ****ed over more often than Butters Stotch. All that guy has done is outplay Kolten Wong at every level and at a harder position (SS). He played alongside Wong at Hawaii but was simply never as 'pedigreed' a player. Last year he finally gets some extended run and puts up a .393 OBP and 1.8 WAR in a whopping 250 plate appearances. The guy can be a good major league starting 2b and he's entering his prime, yet all we ever do in STL is bury his ass because he wasn't a shiny first round pick like that ****ing hyperactive terrier we gave a 5 year extension to.

The Royals would get 5 years of him and I'm telling you, this guy takes nothing but quality ABs. He'd be a 3-WAR player in a full-time role with ease, IMO. He's played SS his entire minor league/college career and when asked to sub at 2b, he's done so quite well.

Mostly, I just really want to see this kid get a shot somewhere and the Royals could use a long-term 2b in the worst way. He can play there and play well. I'd much rather send you Wong but I don't think anyone's fooled by that clown anymore.

If Moore thinks he can get Moustakas extended, that's definitely the route I'd take. But if they can't come to terms, wouldn't this be worth considering?

A) They'll have clauses voiding them for personal conduct issues. If Ventura was drunk when he crashed, that contract will almost certainly be void.

B) Guaranteed contracts are almost all insured. Most of the big-money insurance brokerages that used to insure these contracts for injury have stopped doing so, but they're virtually all still insured for accidental death and things of that nature.

So there's a good chance that either the contract isn't paid outright or that the Royals aren't the ones paying it. Probably found money for the Royals.

They're guaranteed on death as long as it's accidental, so if it turns out Ace was under the influence they could fight it. It's also insured so it wouldn't be out of pocket

Assuming if Ace was under the influence, I can understand where the Royals are coming from in terms of voiding that contract. However, I would suspect that they will find a way to make it reasonable to his family, if it comes to that.

The Royals can't really afford to have bad PR, especially when the emotions are still raw.

They aren't that type of organization either. They'd find a way to settle I'd think. I'm hoping he had no alcohol

I agree with you, I don't think they were that type of an organization as well. But at the same time, I understand that it is a business aspect, and that their payroll at the moment is nearing max capacity.
