Apple Watch

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/..._campaign=news

After months of rumors and dozens of fan-created images of what an Apple watch might look like, the tech giant will show us what it's been working on today, when it's expected to unveil a new smartwatch at a splashy event in Cupertino, Calif.

We'll be updating this post with news from Apple today, including tweets from NPR's Laura Sydell, who's at the event at the Flint Center.

So, I've been thinking about how a smartwatch could jump from novelty to a device I really want... NFC. If Apple Pay/Google Wallet can push NFC to the forefront and we have NFC payments everywhere, NFC turnstiles for the subway, NFC loyalty card scanning, NFC self service lanes for ticketless entry to concerts, etc etc then I am on board with a watch that let's me leave my phone in my pocket. I know that sounds a bit ridiculous but I can definitely see how scanning the chip in my watch would be far easier than pulling out a phone for the process.

$200 and have it be something stylish(not even the Moto360 is good enough in that regard yet, but they'll get there) and yes I think it'd be an excusable purchase. Not a "must have" by any means but not a complete joke either. The real key will be the build quality and style of it.

For me, it would have to do more than that. I'd like it to be able to let me start my car, unlock my house, turn on lights, do the payment thing, airplane tickets, gym entrance, etc.

It would have to do a LOT.

You'll probably see stuff for Hue, Nest and the other home automation stuff pretty quickly. Granted, home automation comes with its own set of overhead but I think the connections should be there soon.

I wholeheartedly agree but I simply assumed all of those(plus health monitoring, etc) since those exist as iOS/Android apps now it should be a breeze to get those integrated. The NFC stuff exists in theory now(and has for 3 years on Android) but I am thinking that Apple can drive the adoption rates to make it actually useful.

I think Apple screwed up big time in not pushing ApplePay LAST YEAR then by the time the Apple Watch was ready this year, the NFC infrastructure for all of this would be in place.

He was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that it could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.

I think they wanted to, which is why that useless Passbook app is in iOS7.

I wouldn't discount the amount of work it took to get the banks, retailers and credit card companies on board. Google took an "if they build it they will come" attitude and it didn't work out.

btw, for those following NFC, everyone dragged their feet so long that now there is a legit threat to it. CurrentC

CurrentC has a MAJOR advantage in that retailers won't pay credit card swipe fees. It will also work the same on EVERY smartphone regardless of OS. Pretty much all the big retailers (7-Eleven, Alon Brands, Best Buy, CVS Pharmacy, Darden Restaurants, HMSHost, Hy-Vee, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Publix Super Markets, Sears, Shell Oil, Sunoco, Target and Walmart) will have it sometime in 2015.

Now, Google Wallet works at something like 300,000 locations already so it's not going to be easy to dislodge those... but the savings to the retailers will make CurrentC their primary choice and make it a lot harder for Apple Pay and Google Wallet to expand.

btw, CurrentC won't allow you as a consumer to use a credit card through it, you would either preload it with funds or it would go through your checking account or merchant specific cards.

Shaping up to be an epic battle between merchants and the big credit cards networks.

This is tough for me because I loathe the credit card companies but I also think CurrentC is a step backwards in the tech arena.
