Maybe. We won't know because he's not around to tell anyone what he was going through. And that's a shame too.

Concussions can cause Lou Gehrig's disease. A very high % of football players have Lou Gehrig's disease. We have found out that concussions release a protein into the spinal fluid that causes Lou Gehrigs disease.
They think that is how Lou Gehrig got the disease. He suffered two major concussions in the space of two days and a third in a week. He kept playing.

NFL like most normal people see players as expendable resources. They are paid nicely for their ability to play a game at that level. Once the player is done, HE should have enough money to take care of himself and medical bills for the rest of his life.
Honestly I dont feel sorry for JR or any other NFL millionare that has the ability to make that kind of money and not plan for the future. Why should the NFL and teams pay these guys millions then babysit their stupidity and failure of financial planning when their days are over? |

I know some of you mentioned Jim Tyrer, a guy in the Chiefs Hall of Fame. He was the consummate tackle, protected Lenny's blind side for most of the AFL years. He played up till 1974 when he was cut by the Washington Redskins. He raised his kids in KC. In September of 1980 he came home, shot his wife dead, then killed himself, with the kids in the house. It was shocking, and for sure it kept Tyrer out of the Pro Football HOF. He was despondent over his businesses failing and was in money trouble. He was very good friends with Dawson, Ed Budde, Arbanas EJ Holub, Dave Hill, and a bunch of defensive guys like Lynch and Lanier. It was extremely shocking back then, and it wasn't talked about much because it was such a tragic thing.
Tyrer was only 41. You can read the newspaper story from when the murder/suicide went down here: http://tinyurl.com/6obkfh9 Last edited by gblowfish; 05-02-2012 at 08:06 PM.. |

But, their is a line that society doesn't cross. Even if everyone involved is a adult volunteer. The gladiator refrence has been brought up a lot today. There would be a huge line of people wanting to be Gladiators if we allowed that type of sport to exist. I saw Jim Mcmahon from the Bears on tv recently. He can't reemember how to get home from the grocery store. We don;t need to see that happen to all of our former players.

Yes, I do. When one gives their life to save another. That may not fit the typical definition of suicide but that's what it is. And when I mean to save another I mean someone taking a bullet for someone else, someone falling on a hand grenade to save others, etc. I don't mean like "I'm a dick husband and my wife would be better off without me so I'm going to off myself".

Yeah, pretty much. I would say that there very few exceptions. My father passed away in 2000 of Cancer. Some time before he passed away he asked something of my brother and I. He asked that if, near the end, he was obviously declining into a slow death, that we take him up into the Rockies and help him make a camp. He wanted us to leave him with minimal supplies, including one of his pistols so he could end his own life. I told him that I would do that for him. He ended up dying rather suddenly due to a complication after a surgery instead. He did get what he wanted. He remained lucid until death. I suppose you could consider that selfish if you choose to. I think asking him to continue living into the final stages of that disease would have been selfish on my part.

It's just a matter of time before someone dies on the field.

True but when you think about it, if you were going to die doing something would you not want it to be doing something you love?
I mean we all want to die old and gray with our family around us. But if I were a pro-player I would much rather die on the field doing what I loved to do than say getting killed by a drunk driver. I chose to be on that field knowing the risks but it's what I love to do. Racecar drivers have died during races yet the tracks are still open and the cars going faster than ever. |

For all the talk about how rough football is I still don't think it's as rough as hockey.
