Talks with Eric Berry for extension 'ramping up'

Per Ian Rapoport.

To the few out there who think we don't need this guy for a good price, happy to see that the front office is of course on the right side.

You get 4th and 1's because of tackles like the ones Eric Berry makes. That's game changing.

Calling him a "very good tackler" is an understatement.

You're getting an All Pro FS. An All Pro SS. He's proven it on the field. Lets not act like this is his first year receiving accolades. The man has been ballin' since his rookie season.

6 Years. They usually have you figured out after 6 years in the NFL. Yet people can't stop raving about Eric Berry. You know why? Because he's that good.

He was a premiere box safety and some of you said, "Oh but you don't pay a box safety that much". Then he became an all pro FS and you're giving us the same BS line.

But you're right. In his 1.5 years of playing FS, he hasn't amassed as many interceptions as Earl Thomas has while playing FS his entire career. But that's ok, because if that's the one hole in his game, if we can call it that, then it still doesn't offset everything else that Eric Berry does so well.

He is a top 3 player at his position despite his lack of interceptions. Pay him top 3 money.

Well luck for the Chiefs then that Antonio Gates should be retired in a year or two.

Berry was tied for 4th among safeties in passes defensed. And I'm pretty sure that's actually 3rd BC they have Tyrann Mathieu listed as a S and I'm pretty sure he's a CB.

In fact, Berry had more passes defensed this year than Earl Thomas has ever had in a season.
Berry has actually had THREE seasons of 10 passes defensed and Earl Thomas has never even had 1.

Berry is better than Thomas and it's really not close. He's just as much of a ball hawk. He's far better than Thomas in the box.

The difference is that We play Ron Parker in the Earl Thomas so Single high position a lot of the time whereas Thomas plays that role 95% of the time.

And FFS please name all these safeties who are awesome at covering elite TE's bc the last I saw nobody was stopping Gronk or Gates.
Gronk stomped his foot all over Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas's faces in the SB. There is no such thing as a safety who can cover those guys every play.

Berry is essentially the same guy as Kam Chancellor in the box and he's basically the same guy as Earl Thomas playing deep.

Yet people have no problem advocating that the Chiefs make Eric Berry, a box safety with few other skills, the highest paid safety in the league while paying Alex Smith "Franchise" money. Not elite but "Franchise".

This is the dumbest fan base outside of the Jets.
Hilarious, defense has carried this team for 2 years

We should have been in the playoffs last year but Alex blew it multiple times

Smith was a flaming bust for 7 years, berry has been an all pro level safety since his first step on an nfl field...gee, wonder if he'll be even better with an off season not fighting cancer?

What's the safety equivalent of not throwing a TD pass for a season?

You ****ing idiots, all pro players get all pro money...and Clark will happily give it to him

Berry is a stud player and we should get him locked up. Thoughts on letting him roll out of here over a few dollars is insane. He is a great player, great leader and great community guy.

He should get 10 mil per year and he's worth it to us.

We debated this topic all last season and I firmly believe that the Chiefs can replace Berry with a player that costs half as much and see little to no dropoff defensively.
On the field, they can probably replace Berry by re-signing Abdullah and Branch...but the presence of Eric Berry in the building is hard to put a price on.

The guy beat cancer and came right back to be a first team all pro and is an unquestioned leader.

If you were running the Chiefs, Eric Berry would be a Raider next year.

Normally, with business decisions in pro sports, you try to refrain from using sentiment whinin your line of thinking. That's what good GM's do. In this case, use the hell out of the emotional side. Eric Berry needs to stay.

I'd also like to add that a HUGE reason this defense held it together down the stretch (after Houston and Hali got hurt) was Eric Berrys play in the secondary (along with a few other factors) as the year went on. The guy got better and better with every game...coming back from cancer, playing FS instead of in the box, etc.

This team needs to lock up Berry and I'm very excited to see his play going forward with a full offseason to prepare for his upcoming opponents.

People overvalue the player because of their connection to him as a Chief since 2010.
He could before they ****ing ruined him by starting him at SS. Berry should have been our FS from day one.
