Took a trip to the Old Kansas City Stadium last night
It's in the hood and there isn't much but a little monument of Monarch and Chief players from that time. It's a cool part of Kansas City sports history and makes you think how stupid the city planners were to build the stadiums outside of the city.

It was awful! A lot of single family homes where the stadium once was. Thing is where the stadium is at there's a beautiful view of downtown.

In general and for the old stadium. A baseball diamond normally faces northeast and some occasions to the southeast. Its for sun purposes.
You can see here in this pic where the skyline was, it was down the third base line. |

I remember going to Royals games there as a kid, including the last game, which was on my mom's birthday. Take a look at those low attendance levels, by the way:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/te...e-scores.shtml A few years later, I went to Lincoln for junior and senior high school. Those are the two schools next to Municipal's old lot. There was a lot of violent crime in the neighborhoods where I lived and where I went to high school. (I lived a couple of blocks due South from Paseo High, which received some notoriety a few years ago when Pizza Hut refused to deliver pizza there in the middle of the day, citing crime concerns. My parents moved there in 1963 and have never moved.) A reliable measure of violent crime is the homicide rate. There was a surge in homicide rates that begin in the early 1960's and that reached alarming levels in the 1970's. Now that the homicide rate is much lower overall and that crime rates have increased in some of Kansas City's more outlying areas, it's easy to look back and think that Jackson County was foolish in locating the Truman Sports Complex where it did, but that is not how the majority of area residents saw it at the time the decisions were made. Crime rates were unacceptably high where the stadium was, parking was bad and the facility itself was not in good shape. Building gorgeous stadiums in a safe part of town and with lots of parking was an attractive option. Graphic of homicide rates in USA appears here... http://www.americanthinker.com/legac...urders%201.bmp http://www.americanthinker.com/artic...est_media.html Last edited by DanT; 12-30-2014 at 11:28 AM.. |

Someone clue me in, here. Are we talking about the old Municipal Stadium before the Truman Sports Complex was built? Where was this located? I think I was about 1 year old when it was built.

I remember going to some Athletic games back when and later on Chiefs games. The one thing I remember about parking during the Chiefs games, was my dad finding a home owner where we could park in their front yard. Since cars were parked several deep, not much was thought about giving the keys to the home owner to allow an early arrival/departure car a way out. Granted, the only away game that I have been to, was in Minneapolis. That downtown parking was a pure cluster and tailgating in their multistory parking garages were frowned upon. So, I am not a fan of downtown stadia; narrow streets, one-way streets, numerous lines to get into parking garages that may or may not have an empty parking slot, waiting on stop lights to cycle through their weekend sequencing, etc, etc.

Huh, interesting. Not too far from the Truman Sports Complex. Of course, that is a bad neighborhood. Yikes!

I can barely remember going to one game. I believe it was the Oilers and Earl Campbell.
