The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

You know what....I refuse to freak out if this happens.

I don't dislike Smith as much as most of you obviously do. I've said several times that I expect to see two(2)(DOS) quarterbacks in KC better than anything we had on the roster last year. It makes a lot of sense to go get a solid vet and draft a rookie.

Trent Green wasn't very good in the W column before coming to KC either.

I'm putting some faith into the new GM and the new coach, because they've both proven they're pretty decent with the quarterback position. If they see something in Smith and don't pay too much...so be it. Let's see how it shakes out.

I'm all for taking a QB #1....however, if the talent scouts for this team determine that the top quarterbacks are David Carr-Ryan Leaf-Tim Couch-Jamarcus Russel-Akili Smith.........then by all means, do something different. Don't pick a guy just to pick a guy.

If nothing else, acquiring Smith before the draft gives them some flexibility to move around, acquire some picks and take some chances on players.........including a quarterback.

If it's PART of a plan and not "THE PLAN"....I'm giving this new group a year or two to win me over before breaking up with them.

The shit that people say about Flacco is unbelievable.

http://www.pro-football-reference.co...F/FlacJo00.htm

I'd gladly give up two firsts right now for a QB with this level of production who just ****ing turned 28. And, yes, one year matters a ****ing shit ton.

Did this fan base not learn shit about the Cassel disaster? The QB who would "hit the ground running"?

Sign Alex Smith, let Albert walk, tag Bowe and draft Luke Jockel, Chiefs will be the exact same team. Pathetic.

ok cool

fair enough

he was 6-2 this year and played above average in 75% of those games

he has a 300 yard, 4 TD playoff performance on his resume where he scored two late 4th quarter TD drives including a game winner

comparing him to 2001 Trent Green is MORE than fair, and I think his ceiling is 2003-2005 Trent Green

JUST MY OPINION BUD; I didn't mean to anger you.

I'm starting to regret the BlackBob ban. He would send this place over the top right now. Mistakes would be made.

I'm not even trying to bash Trent Green. I loved Trent Green. He's one of my favorite Chiefs.

I think Alex Smith with Andy Reid could be a 4000 yard 25 TD 10 INT kind of guy. Doesn't really excite me but that would be my prediction for him in 2013 on the Chiefs if we resigned Albert, Bowe and added a playmaker or two for the offense.

Just my opinion. I could be wrong. I've been wrong before.

I do know that these guys:

Freeman, Stafford, Cutler, Palmer, Rivers, Schaub, Dalton and Flacco

wouldn't excite me either
Flacco has started 5 more games than Smith and has 3000+ more yards, 21 more TDs and 7 less INTs.

He's 100% better. Smith is more comparable to Cassel than he is to Flacco.

These guys are fringe franchise QB's who, if given a few bounces and a little luck, AND A GREAT TEAM with solid coaching, may win a Super Bowl.

I wouldn't trade our #1 for any of those guys. I'd rather take Geno and hope we get an Aaron Rodgers then take Andy Dalton or even Joe Flacco.

Stafford was pretty good two years ago but he still makes too many WTF throws and he took a step backwards this year. I don't think he's a winner.
Hootie, I don't understand how you can lump Flacco in with the second-tiers. He just carried his team on his back to a Super Bowl win.

No shit. If the Ravens are stupid and not use the exclusive tag on Flacco I would offer him the biggest contract in NFL history and gladly give up 2 first rounders.

No. Alex Smith is the PERFECT veteran backup.

If Geno is dinged he can come in and hold course for a couple games.

We'll probably trade for him but he WON'T get a big contract like Cassel or be the unquestioned starter.

Smith and Cassel are statistical clones. You have to ****ing work a Jedi-mind trick to make an argument that these are different people.

Smith is the ****ing definition of mediocrity. Benched by a QB whisperer because he...wait for it...didn't give his team the best chance to win.

And the Chiefs would give up, freely mind you, something to acquire this player. And...wait for it...dipshit fans will try to justify, or worse, defend the acquisition.

Jesus man relax. We don't even know that Alex Smith is for sure a Chief just yet.

If he is, then it is what we do on draft day and training camp that will define these guys. We draft a QB at 34 and do either of the following and I'm happy:

A. Develop him and start him in year 2 or 3 the old fashioned way

or

B. Give him a legitimate shot to win the job outright in training camp like Seattle did last year.
